ok so the headers i bought for my 84 have a bung for the o2 sensor but i noticed that its only collecting off of 1 of the four pipes. where as the original collects after where all four pipes go into one. would this make the car run rich/lean?
While all the cylinders should burn about the same, it should not matter very much. It's probably mounted higher to keep the sensor hot, as headers tend to allow the exhaust to cool more quickly, impacting how well the sensor will work. On the stock car, only one bank of cylinders was sampled!
I highly recommend JetHot or another ceramic coating for those headers for two reasons, besides looks: 1) the thermal effeciency improves, which is essentail to scavenging, and 2) greatly increasing the life of the thin tubes.
I would move the sensor bung to the collector and upgrade to a 3/4 wire heated O2. But that's just me.
What he said. I would be very uncomfortable having 8 cylinders managed by what is happening in just one. It might be fine but the opportunity for false data is higher. It would not be very expensive to put in another bung and plug the one that is there.
The stock sensor only samples the exhaust of half the cylinders. If you feel you have to move the O2 to the collector to read from 4 cylinders, you probably ought to put one in the other collector to read from the other 4 cylinders, too. Don't forget to swap to a computer that is equipped to handle two O2s.

And if you have the bung moved, check ahead of time to ensure that the sensor does not interfere with the tranny/ frame/or ? in the new position.
On my SW headers the bung mounted the sensor so that it interfered with the tranny and I had to have it clocked to 3 o'clock to solve that.
