Had a D36, put 3.54 gears into it, upgraded the engine with a HotCam and LT headers, broke the D36, upgraded to D44. All is right with the world.

I went as fast as 11.77 with the d36 3.07's about 25 passes in the 11's on spray plus a couple hundred NA passes from 14 down to the 12's street tires and drag radials. never broke it
went bigger cubes and swapped in a 44, my 36 is my back up

Nothing broken yet. Putting 3.73 gears in this spring. Staying with the stock torque converter...keeping my fingers crossed.

Higher stall converter actually eases the shock to the rear.

Broke 2 D36s and finally upgraded to a D44. The D44 has held up pretty well through a few seasons, but I did snap the shaft that holds the spider gear last year.

Installed 3.75's years ago which lasted about 3 months. Romped on the throttle on morning getting on the on ramp. The rear end exploded taking the housing with it. Scared the crap out of me!
I replaced it with another 36, with I would have spent the extra money and upgraded.

it is starting to sound like a D36 is a LOVE/HATE and a HIT/MISS relationship.

The poll is missing at least one choice. I broke one and never dragged.
Now run a newer-design, cryo-treated 36 with a 3.54 gear set that has double the contact patch of the short lived 3.73s.

I have about 35 passes on mine and who knows if any of the previous owners tried drag racing. No problems yet but my 3/4 complete winter project is heads, cam, inake and torque converter so who knows what the future holds.

Over 800 passes, and... knock on wood. If you guys wouldn't spend so much money on the engine you could save money on rear ends. I DO have my eyes peeled for an affordable D44.
RACE ON!!!
