ok replaced the alternator and it looked fine drove it for a day or two and then now i go to get in my car and the battery is dead yet again. my stereo shop guy said that there was 2 accesory wires under my dash and one was getting constant power. that might be the drain there. if i cant fix this soon im about to take it to the dealership and i dont want to.

sorry for the thread jack i didnt want to start a new post if i have about the same problem.

I am having the same issues in my 86. My mechanic traced it to the gauge cluster.

I had this problem a few years back and it ended up being a combination of two things.

1: bad voltage regulator for the battery. yours is internal so that is probly why it worked for a bit when you changed the alternator.

2: bad ground between the engine and body and battery NEG cable (secondary, small one) and the body

well i had a cheap battery in there and i checked it and pretty much all 6 cells were dead. so i replaced it with a interstate one and it seems to be workign fine.

You might want to repeat jfb's procedure again.

A fresh alt and batt can easily disguise a leak until the batt runs down again.

Nice write up JFB
