Buddies vette hit the dump today we think. His check eng. light was flashing and I checked the codes. p0303 and it was pending came up which is the cylinder misfire. But we started it and its shaking pretty good while in park and while driving. While driving tuns of white smoke is pouring out the back. I think its a head gasket leaking or somthing. Anyone have info or advice? Friday we are going to tow it somwhere by us. But info before that would be great! Its a 96 with 159,000 auto
Sounds bad,( engine not running smooth) but I have seen white smoke come out of auto trans cars that had a bad part(passing gear kick down) that bolts to auto trans that has a vacuum line that goes to the intake. Trans fluid in the intake will cause white smoke too. Hope it this and not a head gasket or worse. Check the trans fluid and look for bubbles in the radiator if a head gasket is bad it will pump air into the cooling system.
Sounds like a head gasket. If it's smoking a lot, you should probably not run the motor until you get it checked out . Too much fluid in the cylinder=hydrolock=engine destruction.

You an forget the trans fluid as the cause of the white smoke. The 700R4/4L60-E has no vacuum modulator, therefore no way for trans fluid to get inside of the engine.

RACE ON!!!
Thanks, never owned newer model GM auto. Old school from back in the 70's when I wrenched for a living. Saw a lot of old 3 speed auto trans do this.
so if its a head gasket, I have to do a compression check? how do I do that and what do I do about going to try and fix the head gasket? Should he get it fixed from a pro?

??? No. The compression test is to confirm it's a blown head gasket. If it IS a blown head gasket, there is no reason to do a compression test.

If you have to ask, "how do I do that and what do I do about going to try and fix the head gasket?", my guess is that you aren't equipped to replace a head gasket on your own. If I am wrong, start tearing it apart.
sorry your right. No I havent ever been around the engine in words of working on them. So I wont try. But I was just trying to say and ask if I have to do the check, then how do I go about doing that? But never mind Im just going to let the real car guys do it.
