when turning sharply to the right, I get a grinding type of noise (I can feel it more than hear it) from the rear of the car. Only every now and then and usually when I'm accellerating, not coasting. Seems fine most of the time.
I did the rear wheel bearings on my '85, and it wasn't as bad as I thought! I'd rather have wheel bearings than diff problems!!!! I'll jack 'er up tonight and see what I can find out....
Yeah sounds like a bearing problem. If so, do the U joints the same time.
Then, while youre under there, change the gear oil in the rear if it wasnt done since youve owned it.
If your bearings off your 85 had a lifetime warranty, buy new ones for your 91 and return the old 91's for a refund.
That wouldnt be honest though eh?
:D
Let us know what ya find out on inspection.

hmmmmm.... never thought about that! I have the receipt, from Pep Boys! I could just pull these and return them for exchange!
Okay, tonight I jack the car up in the rear, set her on jack stands and put it in neutral.
Rear bearings seem okay. Very tiny amount of play when I grab at 12 and 6 o'clock and wiggle. Almost can't tell it's there. They'll probably need to be replaced someday, but not this winter. Certainly not bad enough to cause the racket I felt today.
I inspect all the u-joints. They are all very dirty and rusty. They'll need to be replaced someday, too... but they are all very tight, zero play. So they appear okay for now.
Then I noticed the problem. The muffler hanger near the tip on the passenger side.... I can grab the muffler and move it up and down. When it goes up, it hits the car. I guess when I turn right, maybe if the road is rough enough, the vibrations move the muffler up and down and cause alot of vibration in the rear! I put a wedge of rubber in there with the other rubber piece and tighten it down very tight. I'll drive it tomorrow and see how it does.
well, that muffler was a problem and made some racket, but didn't get rid of the noise I hear.
I think it's in the tranny. When I'm at a stop, and powerbrake, I can hear 'rattling' in the tranny. That's not good. I guess the noise gets worse when under load and turning. Most of the time I don't feel it, but it gets worse when turning under a load.
I am definitly not a tranny guy, but I troubleshot the heck out of a 700R4 I built from scratch for a different car. About the easiest way to check for preliminary problems on the tranny is to see if the fluid on the dipstick is foamy. Aside from that, -Matt-
Replace the u-joints. You may not get enough slack by moving the shafts by hand but when you put load on them they display the problem. Worst case, you replaced your old u-joints and did not fix the problem. I had one going out on me, and I could not move the half shaft by hand. When I took it off, it had a couple needle bearings missing causing my problems. Best place to get good replacement Spicer is Toms Differential. They cost less than stock replacements and will last a heck of a lot longer than the Autozone/NAPA/Pep Boys garbage.
Sounds like wheel bearings or u joints. Jack up the car and take off the wheel. You should be able to "feel" with each part to see if it has alot of play.
