Default Wiper Collision

I know this is a problem on earlier model C4's. I had never had a problem with it for 9 months, then with the last rain storm they decided they were going to be horrible. Anybody who has had this problem knows what I'm talking about, having the wipers fly around and then slap the windshield again. It's a little harsh.

What needs to be done to fix this, is it an upgrade to later year wiper arms, or what exactly. Also what kind of cost is involved.

I thought your wipers came together in a collision! I was going to get on here and laugh at you, because that happened to me once. Bent one of the arms when it happend.

If they're coming off of the windshield, then you probably need a new spring that goes in the arm. Beware, it is of very high tension (the new one that is).

What happens is that everything works just fine unless the blades chatter. If they chatter bad enough then they get just enough out of sync that they hit each other. That is what knocks them off the winshield. It's real nice.

I would say that I just need new wiper blades, but they are fairly new, still in very good condition. They just tend to chatter unless the windshield is wet enough, etc. The thing is it never rains consistently here, it'll wipe fine, fine, fine, chatter, fine, fine, chatter, chatter, chatter, fine, chatter, WHAP, fine, etc.

Try a Gordon Killebrew trick and reverse each blade (I mean remove a blade rotate it 180deg and reinstall it on the same arm) to reverse the angle on the "set" that they take after laying on the windshield over time. It's supposed to lengthen the useful wiper life without doing any mods.

Nate,

Upgrade to 1996 wiper arms and blades. get with 18carfan to get the parts.

These arms have a better angle, stronger pin and tension spring.

I use two different size blades, I forget the actual sizes, but one is 2in. shorter than the other. I don't notice the difference except, of course, the fact that they don't hit each other any more.

Nathan, Check the forum's Tech Tips section, C4 area. There's a great write up on this subject with all the wiper arm info and adjustments you're looking for.

If you had the blades replaced the replacements may be alittle long than stock.
You may have to replace it with a GM part number wiperblade.
I had the same problem but i'm getting rid of the car today so i no longer have that problem.

Just fixed mine. Call 18carfan. You'll need 96 wiper arms and blades. Cost is in the $80 range. $20 for each arm and blade. The new ones are much nicer than the old ones. Took 2 minutes to replace. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. In mid 95 they changed the shape of the arm slightly to stop this. The blades also have a different part number but I don't know if they really are diff or not. I didn't compare. I needed new ones anyway.

Mine act like they are going to hit, but never do. They do give a chatter though every once in awhile.

I wish I had more info but its so rare I drive the car in the rain/ inclement weather.
