great gasket, but you will need perimeter v.covers for them.
btw my heads are set up for both perimeter and center bolt, and doesn't cause mine to leak. When putting them on, clean all surfaces of oil, move them around slightly on the head to center them on the gasket, . (overtightening will cause leaks)

I used the 1/4 inch ratchet. I don't have the original VC bolts, they went with the VCs that I sold. The bolts that came with the VCs were short enough to pull down the VCs and totally smash the rubber gromets that came with them. Seems it should be tight enough.

Perhaps the answer is that they are too tight.

Did all that. Why can't I use perimeter gaskets on center bolt covers?

How about these?

Steel core, extra thick, centerbolt covers.

I went through this in the beginning, and from an earlier statement you made regarding seeing the top of the cover warping in would be good indication of too tight
Things I do, grommet on the bolt will barely smash.

Trying to align them better by moving them up and down, side to side to center them on the head/gasket also seemed to help.

It is real easy to over tighten them, and sounds like too tight.

cleaning surfaces particularly the head, allows the gasket to "stick" to the metal.

I tried the cork/laminated ones and didn't get them to work any better. With those if you over tighten, the top of the v.cover will break as they have almost no "give" to them. I considered the thick blue silicon perimeter ones myself, but cutting off the tab for bolt holes on them for the cover did not seem appealing. But those gaskets are the sheet !!

I was talking about a pan gasket.

Do you keep a fire extinguisher in your car?

Never did. Never had a reason to. All my motors typically run like a top. I have close to a 1/2 million miles driven and only blew one engine, in a Ford Country Squire with a 302, which had known oil pump problems. That was my winter beater when I had my 74 C3.

I hardly ever get into dicussions about gaskets, everyone seems to have their own way. But, I'll say this, whenever I can get my hands on a cork gasket...that is my preference. I always seal the gasket to the cover and have reused them many, many times without leakage. And I kinda doubt your problem was caused from over tightening. My personal experience with the rubber gaskets, at least in my case is the damn things always seem to move. I do ike the idea of the thicker gasket though. May have been the angle, but in your second to the last picture I thought the gasket looked to thin setting on the VC.
