Default L98 Valvetrain Questions

I'm replacing leaking gaskets this winter and figured I would do some mods while at it. I want to upgrade to a set of roller rockers. I would like some opinions on brands and sizes (intake/exhaust). I want to add a cam also but due to financial constraints my Superram will have to wait. I was wondering how the LPE 219 will work with the stock intake for now. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. The plan is to get the intake and have the heads worked over next winter. Also with the came change right now would I have to burn a new chip with the stock intake and then burn another one when I change my intake down the road. The car is a 90 six speed with 50k miles. Thanks for any input.

id personally wait and install it all at once, but as for RR, im getting either aluminum or steel 1.6 with a 7/16" stud. You would need a new chip with a new cam i believe, and you really would need one when you install your superram.

I ran the 219 cam for awhile with just the accel base. It ran pretty crappy. I have the crower 1.6 rockers. They're a billet piece and they're very nice. I have the 7/16" studs too. I didn't have a problem doing the cam before the intake. WHile the cam was out I had the heads reworked too. I didn't even get a chip burned until I had everything together. The car WAS a turd though! Now, its no slouch

Now that my engine is rebuilt and a new cam + 1.6RR's are installed, it is running awful. I put a new Edelbrock lower base and 26lb. injectors too. I hope to solve all my problems by burning a new chip and updated knock sensor as I feel the stock one is picking up valvetrain(RR) noise and misinterpreting it.

Guys,
I am in the middle of some major mods..see sig. Now why were your cars "turds" or whatever? And what did you do to solve the problem? You kinda have me scared, but since the car is in pieces I guess there is no turning back now! (not that I would), but I would like to hear some of the hurdles you had to overcome to achieve desired performance. Perhaps you can enlighten me...Thanks in advance.

I would guess, tuning. From what I am told the car will run like crap with the 219 and the stock chip.

the computer in the 90-91's really hate mods, therefore, a custom chip is a must. After I got my chip it took me a few weeks to get the fuel pressure and timing set where I like it...now she'll run like a scalded cat.
