As I posted earlier, I pulled my cat off and replaced it with two resonators. Now the car backfires on deceleration.
Having read over the different threads on the subject, I think this may be due to a bad sensor or sending unit for my engine temperature.
The gauge does not move even when fully warmed up. And even when the car had cats, it smelled like it was running rich.
I haven't pulled any codes as I am not getting any warning lights on the car.
So, whatcha think? Could a bad sensor cause the car to run rich and now with the cats removed this is why the car backfires? Which is more probable, the sending unit or the sensor?
The stealership wants $260 to replace the sensor. Price includes the sensor and labor.
Which sensor are you thinking of? I am not sure what year, but the CTS on my car is easily testable. If that is the sensor you are speaking of. You can measure it at one temp, then warm it up, even your hand is enough to cause a change in how it measures. A multi-meter is needed for this. On mine the CTS change would only take 5 mins and not be worth $260.
You need a second oppinion. I do not really trust dealer shops. The temp sensor is not that hard to change. Are you sure the backfire is not caused by an exhaust leak, created maybe when the exhaust was modified ? Thats what description leads me to. L98s are not that complicated if you can find a tech with experience with them. If you are going to mod this car, I suggest you download Tunerpro RT (free) or Datamaster (free 20 uses) and get a cable. These scan tools will give you a lot of help knowing what the car needs.
