Why does my belt chirp and squeak??
We replaced the serpentine belt on the engine only one year ago and have put 6,000 miles on my '91 L98 since then. I have tried a belt lubricant but that has not helped. The belt is not worn and seems to be tight enough. It makes a repititious chirp or high pitched squeak. Could it be a problem with one of the pulleys? A bearing possibly, or what? I know this seems like a minor thing but frankly it embarasses me to think people believe my "baby" is not perfect. :)

If your belt is new and you've used the belt lubricant, there is a good chance that it is something else. It could be a bearing. My 91 made a few chirps and squeaks. After chaning the belt and the noise still persisted, I found out my AIR pump was bad.

So how could i find out if the air pump is bad? If I take it off the belt will be way too loose won't it?

I've heard of mechanics actually using a stethoscope to isolate the exact location of those types of noises.

It is a mechanics stethoscope, and they are extremely helpful for locating engine noises, even rattles in the interior. They can be purchased at most automotive stores. It will allow you to pin point exactly where the noise is originating. Always use caution around a running engine though!

Replace the belt again. Also your belt tensioner may have a weak spring which would cause your belt to slip occasionally. Belt slip will tend to polish the rubber causing it to squeak.
