Default Decal Removal

Does anyone know the best way to remove decals that have been affixed to the car's body.
My 94 has the letters "Bandit" just above the back plate. They were placed right on the paint. The condition suggests they have been there for a while. old and faded.

I'm not a Burt Reynolds fan and ain't runnin' from smokey... But would rather live with it then have to deal with a mucked paint job if it can't be taken off cleanly. Maybe Sally will ride in my lap.

Would a heating with a heat gun work?

I use a hair dryer, just heat the decal and peal it off. Don't use a heat gun it gets to hot and will mess up your paint.

Lowes sells a product called Goo-Gone. I never used it on an auto`s paint, so if you try it, do a test patch somewhere under the rocker panel where things are already dinged up.

I removed a dealer's logo decal with a hair dryer, worked great

Several years ago I bought a "remover" from a auto paint supply store that worked very well. It looked and even smelled like a large pencil eraser. It is used in a drill motor, it was about 4 inches around. I used it to remove all the factory stripes from a 85 Trans Am I was going to paint. This worked better than any other method I had every tried. But the other suggestions should be good also. Just understand that when this decal is removed the paint under this is usually a slightly "newer" surface.

I'll give the hair dryer a shot at it first. Hopefully the color contrast won't be too much.
Thanks for all the suggestions.
