What is the application?

Canton lists the following three road race pans for SBC's. (Note
that for the 15-240T and possibly the other pans, a 20mm plug is
required to seal the port for the Low Oil Warning sensor if the LOW
is not in use.)
#15-240 for pre-80 blocks with left side dipstick.
#15-240M for 80 to 85 blocks with right side dipstick.
#15-240T for 86 and newer blocks with one piece seal.
On an '89, I first installed a Canton 15-240T (one pc rear main) and
then changed to a purpose-built Armando.

In recent months, there have been posts about troubles with Cantons
suffering leaks - all I can say is that my Canton sealed well and had no
troubles in the weld areas. With the issues reported about Melling
pumps and the resulting interest in the M-Select series, my vote is
to take care that whatever pickup is purchased will be compatible with
the pan & pump combination.

Here is one of several threads about RR pans that may be helpful

I have the Canton 240 above and corresponding Canton pickup on my 74, 2-piece RMS block in my 86. It has a built in windage tray and trap doors and all that jazz and works great. The fit is awesome and swapping it in for the extra capacity summit pan, you could see all the details and why you get what you $$$ for. I bought mine from http://www.streetortrack.com/ and they were great.

As for fitment, I have longtubes (LPE) and it fits fine. R&R'ing the starter isn't fun, but with the newer mini-style it is tolerable and IIRC you don't have to loosen the header (which I did have to do with the big old one) so in other words, make sure you are using a mini starter!

I've never had leak issues, as I used the fel-pro blue 1-piece rubber gasket with built in washer to prevent over tightening. It also came with the plastic studs for install, which you probably know about, which make pan installs so much easier.

I have the 240T 1 pc rear main, but it will be a while before it goes on. I'm glad to hear there aren't any reported issues with header clearance like all the f-body guys run into. I have also heard wide spread complaining about leaks from the weld and the oil pan to block seal. I got their gasket, and I plan to use lot of the 'Right Stuff' sealer; hopefully that will be enough.

I've had alot of problems with Canton pans over the years. Quite a few had welds that were full of air and leaked (how they do that with a TIG is beyond me), I had one that the pan rails the were not square and it wouldn't even bolt on the motor. I have also pulled a few off of oval track cars that were having oil temp problems or oil starvation problems. Replaced them with our long time oil pan builders pans and the problems went away. These days I wouldn't put a Canton pan on anything, if a motor comes in the shop with one on it, I take it off and throw it in the trash.

Milidon makes a pretty good prouduct for mass prouduced stuff. I've used their stuff on a few bracket drag cars and street strip stuff over the years. So far we have not had any problems with Milidon, and their quality control has been good. Only problem is most of their stuff is kind of on the deep side for a Corvette and you may run into ground clearance problems on a street car.

Moroso is in the same boat as Milidon in my experience. Pretty good stuff as far as their regular mass prouduced pans go, althou they do have some very nice very high end, high $$ drag racing pans but for the money you could have bought a custom Jeff Johnston BF, or something else of the like. Honestly if its a 351W in a street strip Fox body Mustang I won't use anything but the Moroso pan. Its that good IMO, perfectly desgined and built for its intended purpose. I don't use Moroso's stuff on much else thou...

If you like I can give you the number to my oil pan builder. He is reasonable priced (not much more than a Canton, Milidon or Moroso) and his stuff is all hand build.

A few pics of the pan he built for my new LT1.

Here are the specifics....

Early (L98) C4

-400 Dart little M block (non spread pan rails), stock dimensions
-ZF 6 spd
-2 piece rear main seal (I know Ill need a custom flywheel, Tom at ------Carolina clutch has one)
-Prefer dipstick on PS,not a must though. Block has provisions for either
-1-3/4" headers
-Street car, will see the strip and road course few times a year

-I was looking at the Milodon 31900, seems complete/decent price
Used 3 other Milodon pans before with 0 issue.

-Canton Im not sure which, the tech I spoke with basically told me to browse his site and pick one?!?! Dont know which one I ned, HELLO!

-Moroso Im gonna pass on, in their "tech notes" it clearly states they rails may not be straight and must be sealed with silicone. NO thanks.

Help me out here guys, I wanna finish this thing up.

Merle at exotic muscle had a road race type pan made for my LT stroker (less than $400). The pan took a few (4 or 5) weeks but is fantastic. I only had to add the low oil sensor bung.

They build the pans for your specific pump and pick-up applications. I could not be happier with the quality, fit and finish. It also works well with the EM long tubes.

Champ pan. I got a Road Race style & it has better baffeling than a Canton to control forward oil slosh. It also has double windage trays. The lower is a solid style to prevent oil splash. The upper is louvered to direct the oil back to the pan. Straight rails, no leaking welds, pan in stock & about the same $ as a Canton. Champ was reccomended by a forum member & I'm pleased with the product & service.

I used the Canton 3rd Gen RR pan on my 88 vette <-- Big Red.
It sits a little deeper and required about 5 minutes of BFH mods to the X brace but no biggie.
THe 3rd gen pan is 1/2" lower then the vette pan but much narrower so the starter had better clearence and the wings, (oil) is further away from the headers.
F boda have less room for headers because if the fenders and unibody issues so their pan is narrower but it works really well on the C4 even though no one takes my advice on this.
Same oil capacity. Never bottomed out on off road excursions. Big Red ran '95 ZO7 springs and bilstiens so it wasn't THAT rigid.

I'm a Canton Fan.
They make a really nice billet filter mount w large -AN fittings too

I had a Hamburger drysump pan with the big motor later on....

I have the Canton 240t pan on my 89 with the Melling HD pump and corresponding Canton pick up. I also have the TPIS long tube headers. I have no clearance issues and I have no leaks.
