I just need to know if there is a specific type of thermostat I need for my miniram. Mine went out today, spewed some coolant out the resovior and got up to 262 degrees , no damage though. It had a 180 degree thermostat in it, but I've heard of needing a special tstat for minirams. Any ideas?
It appears to be quite thin compared to the stock style intakes. Over on thirdgen.org (f body forum), I've heard of the t-stat bottoming out on minirams. I guess I'll just throw a 180 in, but would a 160 be better? Wouldn't mess with the computer or cause the car not to get to proper operating temps would it?
Some people had trouble here on this Forum too. I think it was early castings of the Mini Ram that had the problem. You can take the old one with you to compare, right?
The mechanic said it looked like a standard thermostat, so he threw a 180 in and everything is great. It occasionally was getting hot, so hopefully the thermostat was the issue.

I have no idea what car you have, but a quick check on the TPiS site says they rec. 170* on L98's and 160* on LT1's. Not that I agree with that, just passing it on. It would be helpful if you would fill out your profile or identify the year.
I drilled holes in the thermostat today and the problem is now solved. I guess I just had a nasty air bubble under the tstat. Also, the tstat isnt bottoming out, the miniram is the newer style with the recess being in the water neck.
