Default Having a bad day...Codes 22,32 & 33

Everything was running fine then yesterday I was coming home from the post office and the car (1986 stock everything except Borla cat-back exhaust - 3 years ago) started to die. I pumped gas and was able to get it three blocks home. Pulled codes today got a 22, 32 and 33. Any ideas?

Thanks all,
Ric

Start with the lowest (22) code first and follow the trouble shooting tree in your FSM to save guessing at causes and wasting money on unneeded parts.

Well, I followed the directions and codes 32 & 33 disappeared after I cleared the codes and re-checked so I am guessing I should replace the relays and stay ahead of that one.

On 22, after jumping the terminals I got a 22 again but cannot find my multimeter so it is either a faulty ecm connector or a bad ecm. Any advice??

Thanks again for the assistance!

Don't guess. Don't replace anything that doesn't test as defective.

You can't successfully trouble shoot on these cars without a DVOM. Chances are that it ISN'T the ECM or an ECM connector. It COULD be the TPS, it COULD be the TPS connector, it COULD be almost any wire in the TPS harness. That is why it is called "trouble shooting". One systematically, in a logical sequence, tracks and checks possible trouble points to eliminate throwing a laundry list of expensive parts at the problem. Anything else is a hack "parts replacer".

RACE ON!!!

I wouldnt mess with the MAF relays as long as the code goes away and doesnt come back. Definitely get the volt meter out and check the TPS, could save you some money.

OK...got a multimeter and everything checked out OK down to the last step "disconnect ecm connector and check for open or short to ground in ckt 417. If ckt 417 OK, it is faulty ecm connector terminal or ecm."

I put the multimeter on 417 and then touched a ground and the meter read 4.99VDC. I know it sounds dumb of me, but I cannot figure out if that means I have a short in that wire or not. I think that does mean the wire is shorted and that I need to replace the wire, but am looking for another opinion!

Thanks,
Ric

IF you read 4.99 volts it's not a short but a power lead!

IF you are looking for a short to ground put the meter on OHMS and check the correct wire, a short will read pretty close to 0 OHMS!

Mechanically I am a wizard, but electronically I am a dunce!!

So, if I have this correct...417 is the TPS signal lead and has power on it (5 volts). So, I should turn the car power off, set my meter to ohms and connect to TPS lead and ground and if the circuit is good it will read some positive number and if not good 0?

Thanks to all for the assistance...I will be sure to return it on mechanical issues

If your looking for a short to ground, set meter to OHMS, place one lead on target wire and one lead to ground. If there is a short to ground, the display will change and give you a reading of continuity in ohms. If there is no short, the meter display will stay the same.

Just disconnect your battery so you don't blow the meter. Ask me how I know.
