For comparison, I paid around $750 for my headers and I'm pretty sure that did not get me 30 horsepower. The more power you make, the more $$$ it will take to get more.

That is true.
I guess I have paid that much a few times.
It's the "no guarantee" part that would scare me away.

At that power level a $300 newly designed camshaft will get you 20hp or better depending on what you have. $750 for a few hp, come on guys, you are not spec racing where it actually matters and where you are limited on what you can do. I think this may be a case of the, "I would pay that", right up until the point of writing the check....

i agree, 400chp vs. 450chp on the street means nothing. you are paying for usable/practicable returns so diminished the whole extra effort becomes nonsense.

i'd pay $0.00 for the "extra" power.

by the way, i never bothered dynoing my car over the past 2 1/2 yrs. i'm not spending $$ on it and absolutely couldn't possibly care less.
While I can see that just bragging about a number is kinda dumb. The notion that the actual horsepower is irrelevant seems like an odd argument. If you just want to feel like you are going fast, go buy some POS compact car and throw some nitrous or a blower on it. They feel fast as hell due to the vibration, noise, and the fact that you feel like you are going to die at 70mph. But they aren't actually fast.

I suspect you want something in the area of feeling fast, but also being fast. If your car felt exactly the same as it does now, i.e. someone could capture the "feel" of fast, but you got passed by every car when leaving a green light, would you really be satisfied?

What kind of guidance did you give your engine builder? I'd think it would be tough to build something for someone who just said "it should feel fast".

To the original poster, maybe for $750 he's gonna pull your heads off and port them? While I wouldn't spend a dollar on some random guy based on a recommendation from some random body shop, spending $750 for 30hp on a built motor is pretty cheap. How would you add 30hp to your car right now for $750 including the work?

aurora, the builder got zero goals from me, other than a huge box full of new and used parts that i purchased, down to the last gasket, and orders to march. a proven combo, i already know what to expect, there's nothing he could do to improve upon the combo that is -- that is to say, what i handed over.

as for comparing to other cars, i couldn't possibly care less either, i don't drive for them to blow their doors off, i drive for me

i like the C4 body style.....just not the stock engine combo. too slow. mine is more fun than stock. that's all i ever cared about. get rid of that damn slow stock feel, the rest comes along with it. all corvettes should be fast.....too bad a good portion aren't. that's why ya gotta fix 'em.

as for mine, i'll be moving on to a C5/Z in 1-2 years. the power should be close to the same -- i just need a more modern car and get the hell out of the 80's -- the C4 is getting too ancient and the styling is accelerating in age every second, if you know what i mean. i would have enjoyed a decently modded C4 for close to 5 years by then, and that's plenty enough.

Bob. Do you know what Brad means?

Brad. Bob drives a ZR1. It's alot better looking then a C5 Z06.

Remember, this is coming from a guy that doesnt like cars, but spends hours everyday on the Corvetteforum.

I only have time for the C4 section. I dont want to live online. More to life.

Take it easy.

These seem like opposite thoughts? If you don't care how it compares to other cars, then who cares how fast other cars are? Fast is relative. If you come from most average cars, a TPI 'vette seems quite fast. The fact that Altimas and Accords make more power, then, would be irrelevant to you. With a stiff ride, darty handling, and a V8 growl, an old C4 most certainly feels faster than those cars. So I'd think you'd be pretty happy in one for a long time.

If you don't enjoy the style of the C4, by all means jump out of it. Life's too short to drive a car you hate. With the stiffer chassis and more compliant suspension, though, you'd better hope a C5Z doesn't feel slower, if that's what truly matters to you.

aurora, thanks for your thoughts. i'll be fine with some minor tradeoffs. like i said, i do like C4 styling -- just not enough anymore as time passes by and it will get worse, that's just the way i am -- too old, need more modern electronics, looking forward to getting into the LSx world and out of sbc gen-I (or II for that matter) based world. down the road after C5/Z it'll be a C6/Z, and so it goes. i'm no longer into putting out $$ making "old" go fast. lately i've been getting more compliments on the car -- and it does nothing for me. i don't like "old" anymore. i used to think the world of C3's.....my love for them is gone too -- the thought of ancient, carbeurated yesteryear half-rickety suspensions and ancient interiors just turns me off, they belong in a museum or some garage-queened lifestyle.

If you don't like "old" why are you going to buy an old C5ZO6? It kind of sounds like you are into these cars for the looks and satisfaction of driving a "fast" "exclusive" car. Maybe I'm wrong, but you seem to be moving into the next gen once the one you are in looses its "oh wow" appeal. If that's the way you are it's all good; just don't fight with the guys on this forum that CHOOSE to drive and work on a C4 or C3. I always laugh when I'm out driving my "old" C3 that has a HOK candied paint job and about 650bhp, and a C5/6Z driver stares at my old car all the way by.....
