Default 430, 455, how much......

So, my DD got rear ended and is in the body shop. I am driving a G6 rental, which is actually a nice car, to my surprise. Not fancy or anything, just "nice".

Anyway, I spoke to Lingenfelter and Accel when I was installing the Super Ram and doing research. The engineers at both companies tell me I should be at about 430 CHP with my setup, maybe slightly better.

Anyway, I'm talking to the bodyshop guy about painting my rocker panels, as they have chips in them

He starts telling me that his friend can squeeze another 20-30 HP out of the car. His "supertunes" are about $750. For him to swing his magic. He was the shop go-fer. Surprised?

I have no idea what this guy would do, and don't really give a crap. I ain't payin $700 for the last 30HP. And that 30 HP isn't even guaranteed it's BEST CASE!!!!

I have to ask, how is this guy in business?

So here it is, what would YOU pay for an extra 25HP if your motor was already at 430.....

I'd do it only if he had a chasis dynometer and knew how to reprogram the computer.

For how much? The full $750? He didn't say it was a chip tune, I told him I already had the chip tuned.

It was some "special magic" the guy knew how to work some magic adjustments.

The guy was FOS, but it did get me thinking, how many suckers did he get at $750 a shot....

if you get 425 chp w/a good tune you're doing real good. The only way to get more through ECM tuning only, would be leaning the **** out of it at WOT. I doubt even going past 13.5 would yield 20hp, I would guess 5-10, although I wouldn't do that.

I don't care how he claims to work his black magic, that's besides the point. Point is he wants $750 for results that are not guaranteed, and best case is 30HP.......BEST CASE!

Another thought......if it is a tune, and I already have a pretty decent tune, I run the risk of actually LOSING power.

I'm really interested in the poll results. I'd like to see how many people would actually buy this. It's kinda an experiment in sociology for me.

You already answered the question...Unless the guy has a dyno in his pocket, there is NO WAY HE is going to do anything to your tune...

How is he in business? Well meaning people like you!!

With no guarantees, I wouldn't pay for it. If it was a sure thing, I would pay $750 for it. Maybe you could do some math and work a deal with the guy? $750 for 30 HP works out to $25 per HP. Have him dyno the car, tune it, and dyno it again. For every HP gained you pay the guy $25. For every HP lost, he pays you $25.

I picked up about 30 RWHP and 50 RWTQ when I dyno tuned my car. I think that's pretty extreme though, and probably not the norm, especially on a car that is already tuned.

with no guarantees, i probly wouldnt spend much more than 500, but it depends on the mods.

Like say i wanted that 30hp more, but my setup is tuned so thats not an option. Say my setup currently had some mismatched parts and such tho. SO i hear a custom cam may bring in more hp over my off the shelf grind. So I spend 350 on a new custom grind camshaft designed for my motor over my current cam that has been working well. Then another 150 for valvetrain upgrades. Its not a guarantee that it will make more power than the cam i have, but you cant tell unless you go for it. If it does, then its totally worth it. its worth it if its only 10hp. ANY gain at those hp levels helps and is gonna cost more money to get additional gains

I agree with Neat, offer to pay him for results on a per hp base or per every 5 hp.
I wouldn't go the gamble route.

Actually even $25 per hp sounds like a lot of money even if it were guaranteed.
that's $100 for 4 hp. Ouch!!

I'm not paying anything. I think it's insane. But that's me.

I am really surprised by how many people would bay $500-750 for the last 30, if you're lucky.

Perhaps it's me who is out of step...

430 is pretty darn impressive.
I hope you actually have that much.
Any plans for a dyno run to see?

Yes. That was the number both Lingenfelter and Accel gave me as CHP for the parts and pieces I am putting together. I am hoping for in the neighborhood of 330 RWHP which would be closer to 400-410 CHP

I will dyno run it, not for bragging rights, but just because I am curious.

Ya know, that's what I'm thinking. Seems I'm in the minority. I don't know what that extra 20-30hp means at the end of the day, but it appears people would prefer bragging rights over money.

You could probably get a real 30 CHP with bigger injectors and a re-tune.
