Default L98 runner/intake/FI queston?

I read here somewhere that the L98’s main weakness is breathing. Someone said it has the 305 runners. (Can someone confirm this? source maybe?)

What do you need to change, just the runners, plenum and TB, or the intake, injectors, fuel rails, and regulator as well?

What car do you get the 350 stuff from? What aftermarket setups have you guys used or seen used?

I know Ken was looking into the mini ram setup.

I guess GM’s aluminum fast burn heads and a decent cam, and the right exhaust would help to.

Thanks

Keith :seeya

Now are you trying to start a huge fight or something? This kind of post gets everybody riled up and going. Hahaha. The short answer is, just dump your tuned port and get a mini-ram. See photo.

The fast burn heads will not work with a tuned port. You can get some larger runner tubes for the tuned port that might give you a bit more horse power. Or you can buy the mini-ram III which fits on fast burn heads. Or you can just take the car to some super-tuner and give them about 20 biggies and get all kinds of power. Or just enjoy the ride you have and "drive it like ya stole it."

Does the Mini Ram bolt to the L98 intake? or does it come with it's own intake? TB comes with it?

What did you end up having invested all together?

Not trying to stir things up, just wantthe facts. :)

Thanks

Keith

I am fighting the same problem. The mini ram and everything you need to get it running right (including a custom prom) would cost me at least $1500.

That is why I am considering a low profile, dual quad setup for my car.

The Miniram is 1 piece intake that replaces the complete lower/runner/and upper L98 intake. It is similar in physical nature of the LT1 intake.

You cannot use an LT1 intake without severe modification on an L98, so that is why the Miniram is a good option if you want more of a tunnel ram style.

From what I know, the manifold is only half the cost. Then you have to get fuel lines (or make your own out). A lot of this decesion will be based on the final goals you have for your car.

Now the comment you made about the TPI being for a 305--I have read in some places that the TPI was originally designed based on the reqiurements of a 305 engine. Where did I read this?? Places advertising larger runners and different intake manifolds, so you be the judge. -Matt-

no GM vettes until the LT1 had the right intake and there isnt anywhere for you to get it because they didnt make it. You can buy large tube runners from SLP and port the plenum and manifold and then buy a 52mm TB. You wont need new injectors or fuel rails, as the computer will just adjust everything anyway (but if you want new injectors, get 22lb/hr from Accel)

I like the super, it comes with the TB and everything, and you buy their intake manifold separate i think (or at least its listed separate). This with a LPE 219 cam is a popular setup from what i can tell and is what im going to do one day. The super is better for street driving i think and the miniram is better for racing. There is a slight advantage for the miniram at the top end HP whereas the super has TONS of torque.

Also Scoggen Dickey Chevrolet makes a TPI base that will work with Vortec and Fasn burn heads.. The Miniram 3 also works with those heads too

This is also one of my main gripes about L98's; they cost so much to modify and they need it so badly. That's where the LT1's seem so attractive. You can modify the engine like crazy and keep the stock intake but you have to buy a more expensive car to begin with <sigh>. That's just the reality of owning a C4--it ain't cheap. :nonod:

Well I did not notice any loss of torque when switching from the LTRs to the Miniram.. My car is very streetable even with the 3.45 gears!!

EDITED for spelling.. I sure miss the spell check the forum use to have!!

the Accel is for the superram, while the BigMouth is made by TPIS and allows for major porting. BigMouth is basically a lower cost alternative for the Accel base, both are good, and bigmouth can be used with the superram.
