Default Changing D44 Fluid

I'm in the process of pumping the old oil out. I'm using one of those red pumps from Advance Auto. When I took the fill plug out, a small stream trickled out, so I know that it was full. However, I measured what I pumped out and it is just over a quart. I've tried inserting the hose several different times at different depths. I suspect that it curls up in the bottom so that I can't get the rest out. Doesn't this thing hold just over 2 quarts? I've still got a quart in there? Any tricks other than disassembly or drilling for a drain plug?

I don't have my books here but I believe it's only about a quart and a half in there. I'll be corrected if wrong I'm sure.

The owners manual states that 1.5 qts plus 4 oz of Limited slip additive is required.

I will be changing mine soon.

I filled it back up with 2 of the 4 oz bottles of limited slip additive and 1 quart of Mobil One 75W90. Maybe that 3.54 ring gear really does displace a bit more fluid than something like a 3.07. Thanks for the replies. I felt much better about not pumping out 2 quarts.

There is a post here that quotes another forum "Corvette-Guru.com" that quotes an alternative method of extraction of 75W90 diff oil.

When I changed the gear oil in my 87, I got just about 1.5 quarts out. I have the same pump and I did have to play around with moving the hose around to get it into the bottom of the case so that I could extract all of the old fluid.

Took a little bit of work but I must have gotten it all out as I put 1.5 quarts in after the two bottles of GM Posi fluid.

Did any of you guys have trouble getting the drain plug out? What size is it and what wrench did you use?

Anthony,
One thing I also do to help in changing gear oil is to get the front of the car and the side opposite the drain plug a little higher either using one ramp or vary jack stands slightly to help oil migrate toward the drain plug when draining and sucking out the oil. Even then, there are still little inaccessible areas that prevent complete removal but should get the majority. I then tilt the car the other way to help insure adequate fill. All of this is of course done with the utmost care for personal safety when under the car.
