my 86 is getting a 383 stroker built but the 8 inch external balancer is gonna hit the cross member i think. there are probly several solutions as to this.. ideas anyone?
thought about beating it but then figured theres got to be some other better out there. may beat it yet though..lol. 6 ichis same as original l98 350 and internal balance and would clear but cant use it cause the 383 is external balance and needs a like balancer.
there is a 7 incher from jegs i hope will clear cause thats what i plan on going with.. any 383r's out there know for sure? ive been trying to figure this out all day. reaaly!!

The L98 in your car and mine is externally balanced. I'm sure others will chime in, but I am pretty sure you can use a 6" balancer on the front of a GM crate 383.
Pioneer, and there are other ones out there that make a small external balance damper. Around 6 1/4"- 6 1/2". I don't remember the exact size. But I have used one on a 383 super ram motor I did that was external balanced in a 87 Vette, and it cleared the crossmember fine without beating on it
By the way... our L98's and all 1 piece rear seal small blocks including LTx motors are balanced like this from the factory: the front half is internal balanced, and the rear half is external balanced.
The smaller External balancer is 6.75" one of them anyway and the only one I could find (reasonable anyway $60.00) is from Professional Products, Jegs, Speedway, Northern and Probably Summit sell it, the part number is 8001.
The L98 are not externally balanced. The one piece crankshafts have a balance weight on the Flywheel/Flexplate only, this is because the original 350 crankshaft had an offset on the crank at the flywheel this was removed when they made the rear end of the crank round to slide through the one piece seal, rather than re-invent the wheel they put a small piece of weight on the Flywheel/Flexplate only to make up for the loss of the small offset. The L98 is not externally Balanced.

I have never heard of a flywheel/flexplate with a weight on it to be considered a internal balance engine. If your adding weight beyond the crankshaft, its external balanced. Without a weight on the damper or flywheel/flexplate it's neutral or internal balance. And every internal balance engine that I have built that had a weight on the flywheel/flexplate ,has been removed for balancing. And every external balance engine I have built has had weight added to the flywheel/flexplate and or damper
I guess if you consider a flywheel with a weight on it to be internal balance, that's a new one on me.

Your original L98 is an externally balanced engine. Its different from a 400 which uses a weight on the damper. The L98 motor with the 1 pc seal has a neutral balanced damper up front and the flywheel has a weight on one side. Hence, externally balanced.
I'm running a 7.5 on my LT4, there is still room between it and the cross member. Could you not shim the front motor mounts to rais the front end up a touch?
