linkage problem wont let me get key out lately,also can't put in 2nd or first gear,anyone have this problem or fix..thanks 94-a-4
The 4+3 trans has a cable going from the shifter to the steering column that will only allow the key to be removed in Reverse gear position. The cable also locks the column (I believe - mine's disconnected). There is a plunger in the column under the dash, close to the steering wheel. This plunger needs to be *in* to disengage the wheel lock/key removal lock.
You can remove the cable at the shifter; then remove the other end of the cable at the column. Fashion a piece of coat hanger wire (good as any!) about 5 inches long with a loop on one end to go under the column mount bolt; a slight zigzag to follow the column; and a small loop to go up into the plunger cavity to hold the plunger in. You'll have to remove the plastic cover(s) under the steering column to see all this.
