Default ECU program question - how to?

Can some one explain how to get started with programming the ECU for an 87. If I understand correctly, if I get (make or buy) an ALDL cable, get some software (TunerCat or similar) and use the laptop, I can see the data that the ECU receives............but can not change it. And I need to find (on Internet) a BIN file for calibration of the particular year Corvette? And to re-program I need a UV eraser and a programmer to re-do the chip. Did I mis anything? Does the 87 Corvette have a removeable chip?
Any advice (where to start, hardware needed, best prices etc.) is appreciated. It seems that pieces of information are available in many different places but it is hard to tie it all together.

Someone has...
http://www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/tech/promintro.shtml

You need a prog to monitor your ECU: I use Craig Moates software prog. You need a BIN editor: I use TunerCat. Then you need an EPROM programmer: I use Pocket Programmer. If you use a modified MemCal with a ZIF socket, you can use 29C256 EPROMs, then you don't need an eraser.

You'll also need a laptop; I use an old 486dx66 (newer laptops have given problems).

ALDL to PC cables are available from AKM. All this stuff is linked from Promintro.

It's not easy, but it can be fun. Expect 100 burns to get it right...If you're good... :D

(I'm not...I'm figuring 400 burns to get it right...)
