I'm assuning you're talking about an 88. Generally you have to get the front red hot with a torch. The front clamp gets over tightened and embosses the front Y pipe. On rare occasions they will come off with a little (alot) of manipulation. The only other way I know is to cut aline on the front cat and then "manipulate" it off. I guess it depends on if you are planning to reuse it.

I'm just trying to get the damn thing off, with limited tools. I'm not planning on re-using. Thanks for the tips and help!
Went to Wal-Mart and bought their little torch, heated for about 30 minutes and then cut a slit with a several screwdrivers. Pretty tough to get off without proper tools!
I use a dremel with a reinforced cutting wheel on it for this kind of job.
It it a very small machine to use but you can easy cut where there is very limited space.
I took away my cat when i was installing my headers and it was really bad to take away even with the front y off the car.
