Default Exhaust modification

Many of you on this board have installed aftermarket exhaust systems. I started thinking what an aftermarket exhasut system would do for my pickup truck. The questions I have with a brand new vehicle, will a catback system void the new car warranty? Also, will the change in backpressure require further mods of the engine management system or is it a simple bolt on, yielding better perfromance and deeper sound?

An exhaust won't void the warranty, and you don't have to do any further mods if you don't want to. You will get much better sound, and a little more mpg probably.

it is a simple bolt-on and the change in backpressure may set a code if you have fuel injection, but not likely.

The rule with gm is that if you replace a component with an aftermarket piece, only that section of the warranty is voided. (so dont try to get a new aftermarket exaust from the dealer when there's something wrong w/ yours.)

I agree they usually will not viod the warranty . If there is a change in the back pressure, your ECM through the O2s will compensate anyway...

I have been developing exhaust systems on my 96 LT-1, and what I have found from running flowmasters to dual x pipes. Initially you will see some immprovement, but over a period of time ((at least with the OBDII systems) the ECM will end up dialing everything back to what the ECM programming sees as normal. Being the differerence between short term and long term trim.

I'd say go for it my friend!

I agree with the previous posts, your warranty will not be voided. As far as performance gains or gas mileage gains they will be limited and will usually be compensated for by the computer. Where an exhaust works is when you put a high performance air filter up front, add a chip or re-program the computer, increase fuel delivery and/or build the engine. An engine is just a big air pump, you do not want back pressure. You want it opened up in front and the rear. They do look and sound better too!!
