I'm trying to replace my FPR and the screws that hold it on are a start patter, (common) but there is a small needle stud protruding from the center of the patter. I'v never seen this before nor a tool that is a star pattern with a hold in the center to accompadate this type screw.
Any help on getting off would be sweet, i tried to use a pair of pliers but the screws are pretty snug.
Sounds like a tamper-proof torx, you should be able to find them at autozone or any discount tool store. They look just like a torx bit but with a hole in the center.
You can easily knock the pin out and save yourself buying the security torx bits. Use a small screw driver or your choice of tool to move the pin back and forth, it will break off easy. If you have to use a hammer with the driver on the pin.
cool, thanks guys, i could pickture the tool to remove it but have never seen one. I'll check my local checkers and napa and if they don't have one i'll try my luck at knocking the pin off. It's a pretty darn small torx screw so I don't think it will be easy to knock the pin off and not damage the torx threads at the same time.

Thanks for the ad!
Yeah, a lot of electronics/small electronics use these small 'security'-type Torx fasteners, with the centre-pins. Small sets of suitable bits/screwdrivers are usually spold at outfits that carry small appliance-electronic-computer tools. Cheers!

Reason: spelling!
Harbor freight has a 1/4" screwdriver in a plastic box that has a complete set of different bits. Som of the cheap tool sets that you find at the swap meets have the same. I picked up a set at Home Depot.
Good Luck wro87
soak them in WD40 or some other lubricant before removing them, i broke two security bits and striped the screws....AFPR never went in after that ordeal.

Look in the license plate cover area... I bought some of those security bolts for my plates - there was a package that came with 4 bolts plus a 6 or 7 piece set. It was at Napa or Schucks/Checkers.
