87 4+3 Clutch?
I have had my 87 for 11 years.Bought it just after high school with 31,000 miles. It now has 114,000 miles and is in need of a clutch.
I have just bolt ons done to the car, nothing crazy.
But shortly,i plan on building a stout engine for it so im looking for a clutch setup(flywheel, disc, pressure plat, bearings, etc)that can handle some power so when i build the motor,i dont have to change the clutch again.
What do you guys recomend for a setup?
It has to handle 500-650hp,which is my goal for the new motor.
Thanks,great site!
At that power level you should be thinking of a ZF6 or T56.
Are you over estimating your power level? A 500-650 HP n/a small block is going to run like a turd on the street. A super/turbo charged motor is a different story, but we're talking about investing 10-15k into a car thats probably only worth what, 5k? Maybe you should re-evaluate your plans.

Im going to stay with the 4+3,if it goes, ill worry about switching to the zf-6 down the line.
I know this is just a super t-10 with a od unit slapped on the back.It has givin me no problems to this point.I think as long as your not beating on it with od engaged,it helps it last.
Im actually thinking of doing some stuff to this motor even though it has alot of miles.
Maybe cam, heads, intake, exhaust, gears.Ill leave the short block alone and when she goes, ill build the new motor.
Anyone recommend a stout clutch to handle some power?
How about a Mcleod setup?
Thanks guys!
Im going to post another thread about mods to this existing shortblock so i can get your opinion on that as well
But first thing is first,i need to do a clutch and i need a good one.
Thanks again guys.

You can run a 10.7" clutch with the special pressure plate, but Im told my the clutch makers that the plate isn't as strong. The ZF uses a stepped bolt mounting point to get away with an 11" clutch.
See, you are limited by the factory hydraulics too, because you can't get a heavy enough pressure plate to make up for the lack of clutch area without overstressing the hydraulics.
A Dual friction clutch from fort wayne in a 10.4 is probably good to about 400hp, maybe more if slicks are not used.
