First off, I need to change to oil in the OD unit. Is this something thats easy to do myself, or am I better off just letting someone else do it? I've always just had the mechanic do it, but I want to start doing more of the work myself.
Next, the OD has been acting up lately. I used to have to press the OD button a few times and then it would drop into OD. Now the switch does nothing. It's always in OD, except of course when I start out in 1st. I'm guessing that my switch is just bad...right? Is this easy to diagnose myself, or am I better off taking it to the mechanic.
I'm not a mechanic, but between my dad, my brother, and myself, we've been able to fix most things on our other cars, but I've always been apprehensive to touch the vette--and moreso the OD unit.
Get under the car ...Drop the pan (about 10 bolts #10) pull the filter off. Clean both OD and pan serfaces and wash the pan out. Don't forget to clean the magnet in the bottom of the pan, its about the size of a silver dollar and goes on the narrow end. Put new gromit in new filter, slid it onto the shaft. Put new gasket and bolt it back up. Make sure you get the pan even, jumping from side to side tighting a little at a time. Don't over tighten and break a bolt. About 10 ft lbs is ok. Fill the OD back up with ATF. You will need a little hand pump. You can get one at AutoZone for a couple bucks. Once you get this done, I am willing to bet the OD will work better. Ecklers sells the filters with the gromit and gasket for 19.95.

I'd check the switch engagement. A lot of people adjust the button (T-rod) so that they don't accidentally push down the switch. This can give you a hair-trigger switch, or no switch at all, as you indicate.
The switch may have come apart, or squeezed out of its' cavity. You can order a new one from Newark Electronics (OEM supplier) for about $12.00...I hear some GM dealers are charging $50+ for them...
