Default Shift ****: How To Remove?

Need to remove the autotranny shift **** on my 89, but all the GM manual says is the unhelpful, "Remove shift ****." How exactly is that done? I know there's some sort of clip in there. Do I simply squeeze a screwdriver blade down there and pry it off? Or is there some sort of catch that needs to be pressed in?

Thanks in advance,
-WL

A pair of snap ring pliers will get that off easily, I was able to pry it off with a small set of screw driver the first time I did it.

You have the idea, pry the button out with a small screwdriver. Once the button is out you'll see the C-clip.

Thanks.

After seeing so many answers, I now realize my question needs to be revised. There are actually two parts:

1. How do I get the plastic button off?
2. How do I get the **** off?

Thanks for the answers to question 2. Any help for question 1?

Use a small straight screwdriver. Slide it down between the shift button a and the side of the of the ****. It will pop right off.

To remove the steel wedge, buy one of those mini-pry bars from the hardware store. 5-6 inches long and about $5. Use the bent / angled end to pry up against the wedge. It will slide right out effortlessly. I tried a screwdriver for about 10 minutes with no success, the pry bar lifted the darn thing out in about 2 seconds!!! :D

You can buy a set of cheap snap ring pliers for the almost the same price. A nicer set of snap ring pliers with few different adapters cost me ~$13.

When I tried to remove the ****, it would not turn or come off. Is there something else that needs to be done other than removing the circlip?

Hi all,

I just did this last weekend for the first time. A visual depiction really helped.
I used the parts section of the Eckler's catalog. It shows the button and the c-retainer.

Cheers,
Robert

I have a 91 with an auto and all I had to do after removing the snap ring was pull straight up on the ***. It does not twist. If it won't pull staight up try putting a little WD-40 in there.
