Need to remove the autotranny shift **** on my 89, but all the GM manual says is the unhelpful, "Remove shift ****." How exactly is that done? I know there's some sort of clip in there. Do I simply squeeze a screwdriver blade down there and pry it off? Or is there some sort of catch that needs to be pressed in?
To remove the steel wedge, buy one of those mini-pry bars from the hardware store. 5-6 inches long and about $5. Use the bent / angled end to pry up against the wedge. It will slide right out effortlessly. I tried a screwdriver for about 10 minutes with no success, the pry bar lifted the darn thing out in about 2 seconds!!! :D
When I tried to remove the ****, it would not turn or come off. Is there something else that needs to be done other than removing the circlip?
I just did this last weekend for the first time. A visual depiction really helped.
I used the parts section of the Eckler's catalog. It shows the button and the c-retainer.
I have a 91 with an auto and all I had to do after removing the snap ring was pull straight up on the ***. It does not twist. If it won't pull staight up try putting a little WD-40 in there.
