Default Bargain intake mods

hi, i just bought my 1st corvette(92LT1 6spd), and the engine is all stock. I plan on buying the Ed Wright fastchip, and i also want to modify the air intake. I was considering the K&N package that has the filter, and the frame lid (basically no lid), but in the ZIP cataloge there is the Votex Rammer cold air ind system. The Vortex system is about twice as much, and i was wondering if the vortex is worth the money, or to stick w/ the K&N for the better bargain. How noticable is the difference? The chip and the intake mod are all i plan on doing to my engine for awhile, so i want to get the most out of these mods w/o wasting money. thanks alot. -AJ

I would not do the chip until you make some real changes. There are some good options for intakes. The SLP claw is another one to throw in the mix. If you want the best low cost alternative, a cut out air lid and a K&N filter work great. The Vortex some people have had quality issues with, but is still a nice intake. The SLP is a mean looking peice that functions about as well as any of them. I run a cut lid and a K&N. I will go to the "Forced Air" kit someday, just hard to give up 5 bills for it.

BTW, welcome to the Forum.

Congrats on your new Vette and welcome to the Forum.

I run the SLP ran-air. It is worth about 5hp more than the cut lid which is about 5hp more than the stock lid, all with a K&N. The SLP unit was only about $150 and I feel is worth it.

I agree on holding off on the chip change. You will get the best gains from intake and exhaust mods to increase air flow. Then use an AFPR to tune fuel flow to match. Relocate the MAT into the air filter lid, install a 160 deg stat and fan sw.

I'm not sure if it works as well on a stock ignition, but cut back spark plug ground electrodes gave me 10hp (consistent time slip hp gain).

Delete the spare tire, jack and handle/wrench for a 50lb saving (similar to a 6-7hp gain); run with 1/3-2/3 tank of fuel (1/2 tank is about 60lb). Carry a puncture repair kit and cell phone.

Welcome aboard! Congrats on the Vette! Pictures! We want pictures! Wave at other vettes too.

Try also bypassing the throttle body/coolant. It's free! :D

thanks, i think the SLP intake is what i'll prob buy then, but im curious as to why the chip is a bad idea? Ed emailed me and said that if i installed a 160deg therm, and ran 92+ octane, id see 12-14hp incrase at the wheels. Also what is an exhuast u guys recommmend? ill prob just get mufflers, not catback. here is a pic of my vette, nothin special(yet), but its in great shape. Im only 20, so this car is the greatest to me, even if it is a normal LT1.
[IMG][/IMG] im not sure how to post the pic, haha ill see if it works

Not that a chip is a BAD idea, just that it may not be totally cost effective/noticeable since your original post eludes that you don't want to get too deep into the wallet. Which is fine. Don't forget your stock vette allready kicks butt. Me? I would wait till ya get a new cam or some headwork or something, but if you feel like it, do it! It is you who will be enjoying it right? Cool!

yeah a chip isnt a bad idea but you shouldnt waste the money on it until after you make intake/exhaust/engine modifications, then a chip will really bump the hp.

I recommend Power Effects catback, but Borla is also very good. Corsa makes a set that is fairly quiet except at full throttle and alot of guys here like it.

is it possible to paste pictures from your hard drive? i dont have any of my pics on the net, but i cant seem to post them from my hard drive. SLP has mufflers at a fairly low cost, im thinking of getting those, w/ that SLP cold air induction, instead of the chip w/ the K&N performance lid.

No you cannot use your C:\ drive. If you do you will be the only one viewing your post since you will be pointing to a local drive that you can only access.

Go to the HOME page Tab on this forum and create yourself a homepage. Then upload you picture from you local drive to your homepage. It does not matter where you upload too. Your new URL will look something like this

get the SLP intake, some muffler eliminators, and some 4.10 gears since you have a six speed. your car will be a mean SOB then. do the gears before the computer reprogramming.

I think the gears are going to be the most bang for your buck mod you can do. I recently purchased a ed wright chip and air foil "used" and installed it in my vette. The main thing the chip is going to do is allow you to run cooler with a 160 t-stat. I recemnend the chip for this reason if nothing else. I couldnt find a auto fan switch that was listed for the 92-93 LT1. If you do then that might be a better alternative. Good Luck

OK, here's a silly question, is that Carl's car? That pic looks like it was taken at Zachary's on the Cape. That's sort of sad that I recognize where you got the car from a stripper's azz.:)

haha, actually just the pic in the top is my car. the bottom one, i just had saved on my hard drive(i got it off of the internet). I didnt have any other scans of mine, and i figured it would be funny to put that on the page. When i look close, it almost looks like that vette is polo green, i can't tell but never-the-less its not mine.....mine is black. :D

That Vette is black, it was recently sold too which is what prompted the question. That was taken at a um, "gentleman's club" in Mashpee,MA. The green C5 to the left is Afy's car (RIP-next owner rolled it). There are actually a whole series from that day of girls and Vettes. I'm sure if you post in Off Topic, someone will throw the rest of them up.:)
