Detergent vs, Non detergent. Whats the difference?

Of course the oil dumped outta the pump looked almost new, the motor oil was dirty as expected.
If you can run it in a gas powered motor why not a car, what is the difference in function? Just wondering.

how would it hurt say, a 350 on someones C4? Other than not having the detergent bit thing going on, thats what Im wondering.
Back in the day that was what guys used for initial break in oil, something about particles not being suspended as much as regular oil...
Anyone?
Edit: for the record on the "driver" I wasnt paying attention to what I bought.
Wound up dumping in:
-1 qt of non detergent 30W
-3 qts 10-40
-1 qt Mobil 1 10-30 I had laying around.
Oh, and a cheap Fram filter
220k miles, flat tappet motor, first oil change in 2 yrs

I love beaters.

As far as suspension, the detergent oils holds the carbons in suspension so it does not stick and build up like plac (cholesterol) in your arteries.
in an air compressor ND30 ( refered to as non detergent single weight oil) is what is called for as it is non foaming, most compressors used splash oiling, which is also why a great many small lawnmower enginges recommend it as well.
not recommended in most engines as sludge build up is also the result of ND (non detergent) oils due to thermal breakdown, not an issue in air compressors
