Default Detergent vs, Non detergent. Whats the difference?

Was changing the oil on my compressor today, picked up some 30 weight non detergent oil. Manual says both pump and motor take it.
Of course the oil dumped outta the pump looked almost new, the motor oil was dirty as expected.

If you can run it in a gas powered motor why not a car, what is the difference in function? Just wondering.

Non detergent oil can/probably will harm your motor if you use it.

Air or A/C compressor? If air compressor, what does that have to do with a car? Just wondering!

Air compressor, uses a gas motor.

how would it hurt say, a 350 on someones C4? Other than not having the detergent bit thing going on, thats what Im wondering.

Back in the day that was what guys used for initial break in oil, something about particles not being suspended as much as regular oil...

Anyone?

Edit: for the record on the "driver" I wasnt paying attention to what I bought.

Wound up dumping in:
-1 qt of non detergent 30W
-3 qts 10-40
-1 qt Mobil 1 10-30 I had laying around.

Oh, and a cheap Fram filter

220k miles, flat tappet motor, first oil change in 2 yrs

I love beaters.

Two years or 5000 miles....no difference really. I wouldn't worry about it. I don't know how well Mobil 1 mixes with dino oils but Royal Purple does. One quart of non-detergent won't hurt anything.

As far as suspension, the detergent oils holds the carbons in suspension so it does not stick and build up like plac (cholesterol) in your arteries.

I *believe* a lot of race motor oils don't have detergents. I suspect you would just need to change the oil more frequently if you wanted to go that route? A total guess though.

I believe it has something to do with the amount of zinc in the oil.

in a nutshell:
in an air compressor ND30 ( refered to as non detergent single weight oil) is what is called for as it is non foaming, most compressors used splash oiling, which is also why a great many small lawnmower enginges recommend it as well.

not recommended in most engines as sludge build up is also the result of ND (non detergent) oils due to thermal breakdown, not an issue in air compressors

Couple of of notes. Always use detergent oil with friction modifiers in newer cars. Zinc additives have nothing to do with whether it is a detergent oil or not.

Back in the day, GM (maybe others, never owned anything else) used 5 wt break-in oil and if I remember right, it was non detergent which kept any normal wear-in metal particles from flowing through all the works during the break-in. That was for the first 500 miles and not to be driven over 50 mph and not at a sustained (constant) speed. Then it was time for a detergent oil change and then get-on-it like you wanted to on the first day you got it. What a l-o-n-g 500 miles.
