Could, be the float mechanicals in the tank. Two Ideas, first start using Shell or Chevron gas, they have a cleaner that takes the stuff that causes the float to stick. It will take a couple of tank fulls to clean it up. If you don't have the Shell or Chevron available, go the the local auto parts place and pick up a couple of bottles of Chevron II injector cleaner. You will note on the attached carboard that it helps with gas tanks.

This got the 91 L98 gage back to normal in a couple of tank fulls,

Good luck Polo

or if that dont work, I had a car that would read just below a half, and it was dead empty.
no matter what I tried, it would not fix itself.
turns out, someone had changed the fuel pump and the "baffle" that was inside the tank, to keep the gauge from reading erratic, was "catching" the float. once the baffle was fixed, the gauge ran great. too bad I found this out after being towed to a dealer and they found the problem.
I swore I had a half tank. took $18 to fill it (in 1996) and I could see I had an empty tank. all was well when fixed.
