Default ECM question

I've been chasing a low speed miss on my 88, gave up took it to the dealer. He says bad computer which confirms my suspicions because it won't set any codes. What do I need to be aware of changing this out? Should the chip still be ok or do I need that too? Didn't I see on the forum there is an updated factory computer for this car, I believe someone posted old and new part nos? I appreciate any input on this.
Thanks
Harold

usually when you order a new ECM you have to keep your old chip for the new one. Youll have to get the right ECM for the 88 vette as there really isnt an "updated" version for you, maybe they put them together better now than they used to. They almost never go out.

Your ECM has 2 chips. An EPROM and a Calpak. The new ECM comes with none. I replaced all just for peace of mind. Did it myself for under $125.

The '85 has both a cal-pak and a chip. The 86-91 have a contained unit called a MEMCAL, which is a single unit. It has the blue cover on it.

As far as the *updated* ECM, it appears that 1227165 crosses to a 16198259, but check with your local GM Parts Department to confirm this. Regards, -Matt-
