Start the car ('86 Vette - not Jude Cole) when it's cold outside and the steering wheel doesn't want to turn right. Applying a little more muscle allows the steering wheel to 'break' past that stopped point. Then it might / might not happen again as you attempt your next right turn. This might continue for a couple miles until the engine's warmed up a little. Sounds like the problem I had on my '83 Citation X-11. It was the rack. As the weather starts to get colder, I'm not looking forward to fighting with it again. :boxing
Very common C4 problem..every C4 racks fail,or WILL fail. The trick is to flush the fluid out every year to keep it clean inside.
The cold steering problem is known as Morning Sickness.I had this problem when I got my car little over 6 years ago and I was able to prolong replacing the rack by draining the fluid every year.Got away with replacing the rack for 5 years.
It will help alot..if it doesnt, plan on replacing the rack real soon.
The turkey baster siphoning trick works real well too. However youll have to do it a few times in a week to get all the dirty fluid out of it.I bet your fluid is a blackish grey color with tiny pieces of metallic color in it now.
