I changed the thermostat in my 90, auto, L98 to standard 195 degree - the car wouldn't heat up and I thought it might have had thermostat taken out - it had a 195 in but must have been stuck open because it now does come up close to operating tempature. Couple of questions - when I drained the raditor I only got out two gallons and maybe an extra pint and when I refilled this is all system would take - does this sound right - I know there was still fluid in block but doesn't the system hold a lot more? Also when I refilled the system I poured in till full then cranked and ran - when I first cranked there was a small stream running in the high tank - I would have thought that with the thermostat closed there would have been no circulation till it opened. I then slowly refilled till full - it wouldn't take all I had drained so I poured additional in overflow tank. Does this all sound ok? The water tempature now runs in the center of gauge and oil tempature is at 1/3 of gauge which still seems cool.
Thanks
Do a search on how to burp the system to make sure you don't have an air pocket in the radiator circulating around.
You should park the car in a way where the radiator cap is at the highest point possible then refill and warm up to operating temperature and finally idle it at 2500 rpm or so and top the radiator off with your 50/50 water/coolant mixture.
you can jack the front end up also, remove rad cap, bring engine to operating temp (make sure therm is open), hold accell cable open to 2500 rpm, then start adding 50/50 mix, keeping going till tops off at rad cap. you may need to do it 2+ times to get it all out, you can have an air gap in the engine also, not good.
It took me 3 times to get all the air out... had to drive it around between each burp.
Search/Advanced/Archive posts works well & ck c4 tech tips also, great info.
