Default transmission trouble

any suggestions on a problem with an 84 automatic . My tranny hangs up in first gear when the shift indicator is in the od position in the d podition the problem is better but not right the shift timing can be controlled a bit by letting off the throttle at the right time but if you keep accelerating the shift hangs and either shifts hard or drags going into second gear.

any opinions on adding slick 50 to help make this problem better.

does it hurt the trans to drive oround town in the D POSITION.

any suggestions would be appreciated . let me add the vechical sat for a year off the road . although if my memory serves me right the problem existed before it was off the road
thanks Randy

It's time to have the transmission rebuilt. Anything you do otherwise is just a band-aid for the real problem.

You can drive in the "D" position, it just won't shift into Overdrive.

Remove and inspect the governor. If you are lucky, it is governor related. Also, adjust the tv cable as per the shop manual.

Had the same problem with an 85 a few years back. The car had been sitting for a year or two before I purchased it and the valve body in the transmission had varnished which caused it to stick. This is a trick the old timers used to use. I did this and it solved the problem and I used the car as a daily driver for 3 years after this and never had a problem. Drop your pan and change the filter, add about one half pint of lacquer thinner and top it off with ATF. Drive the car approximately 5 miles and then drop the pan again, install another new filter, top with ATF and go directly to the nearest facility where you can get a complete transmission flush. The thinner cleans the varnish out. It cost me about $100 total. DO THIS ONLY AS A LAST RESORT TO A TRANSMISSION REBUILD!

What do you mean by "shifts hard"? My 87 shifts what I would say is firmly. Is that bad? I mean when it shifts you can feel it kick. Does this signal trouble or is it a good thing.

He said, the shift Hangs and then shifts hard or drags which is not a good thing. A firm shift is good.

Have you investigated the possibilities we have suggested?
If yes, which ones?
If no, it is near impossible to diagnose a trans problem from a description.
