CRAIG--NICE JOB, WHAT DID IT ALL COST?? ALSO WITH THE SLUDGE SHOWN ABOVE, IF YOU START TO USE MOBIL
1, WILL MOST OF THE ENGINE START TO BREAK UP THAT SLUDGE? JIMBO :U
Thanks! That was my old '85 motor, so it was a little cheaper to rebuild than newer motors. The block was not worn at all and the forged pistons were in great shape, so the machine shop just cleaned those up. All the other work was done.... New valve guides, valve job, all new valves, crank turned, new bearings-main-rod-cam, new oil pump, surface heads, new lifters, new pushrods, new hyd cam, etc. etc. etc.
I stayed under $1200 for the whole thing. It was still pretty much stock except for the mild cam. It ran 13.73 @ 100 when it was done.
Here's some pics of _MY_ old motor...it's got 120,000 miles on it, always used a synthetic (occasionally Quakerstate), I bought the car at 85,000 miles and have driven the PANTS off it...
And the dirt I dropped down into the lifter valley
Check these out. At about 115K miles. Lousy pic, but I think you can get the idea. Clean as a whistle. All I had to do was wipe the oil off with a rag. Absolutely zero sludge. I guess the previous owners always used Mobil 1 and changed it frequently. I consider myself lucky.

Wow! That is one clean motor for the miles!!!!
Here is my '90 with 127,000 on the clock! The lifter valley is just as clean, I forgot to snap a pic with the intake off.
Yuck!!! I installed my ported intake in September. The valley was as clean as Rocketsled's (and others). Some slight darkening of metal. No varnish. No sludge. The manifold had never been off before. 140,000 miles and ONLY dino.
Heck Nathan, only 60K...that's practially 'brand new' in this post. :) :)
It does look good inside.
I've noticed that knowing the inside of my engine is that clean gives me the
confidence to put the hammer down a little harder without worrying that
something might break. :D :D
