Default [update] Engine rebuild

Here's what the lifter valley looks like. The builder is spending all day tomorrow on it so I'll be over there helping and getting lots of pictures for future reference.

Yuck!!!! That thing looks terrible!

It'll be so nice when it comes back!

Look something like this:

Before:

after:

This was my old '85 motor. Timing chain went on it. Bent 7 valves and did a cheap rebuild on it going all stock with it.

Yuck. At 146,000 miles, my 1984 vette was WAY cleaner than yours. Virtually no deposits, gunk, or staining. Be sure to run synthetic oil when you get her buttoned up.

That previous owner really liked Dyno huh? Kinda looks like one of those what's grosser than gross jokes. You know," What's grosser than gross? When you go to kiss your grandma and she slips you the tongue." Dat's nasty baby! :U

I bet the last owner used regular oil and not Mobil 1.

The previous owner was J-C-5 on the forum. I think he has a little more sense than to put dyno oil in it. I have a feeling it was the owner before him.

After seeing all this crud and stuff, I just hope that the block and heads are ok... pretty please!!!!! *crosses fingers*

I would say that the block and heads are more then likely fine..

If you are changing the springs on the heads (with the mileage you have I hope so). and you change the seals.. have the guides checked.. but I bet you are okay

Yeah.. no coolant in oil or anything. So I think it should be fine.

Yep, changing springs and seals. Is there anything special to checking guides?

Lots of sludge in those pics.

There is a big differance between a motor that has used mobil1 synthetic oil compared to dino oil.

Man-O-Man that looks like they changed the oil every 100,000 miles weather it needed it or not. Makes one think about lethal injection for people who do that to good machinery. :mad  :mad  :mad

I don't care what kind of oil ( dino or synthetic ) has been run it, that motor has been neglected, plain and simple :yesnod:. My 85 has been running dino oil it's whole life and looks nothing like that.

Yeah, I guarantee it wasn't me that caused that. I changed the oil at maximum every 2k miles. I bought the car with 127k on it, all it has now is 134k. I've changed the oil probably 5-6 times since I've owned it. AND i've used nothing but MOBIL 1!

It could be caused by high operating temperatures cooking the oil.
