Default Help on Injector Install

Need some help please? Am doing an injector replace on an 87 L98 stock and need to know how the clips go in to hold the injector into the fuel rail. Would be nice if there were a couple of pictures floating around that I could look at.

The clips are merely an artifact from the assembly line to ensure injectors don't get pulled out. Don't sweat them, throw them out if you want.

Notice that the clips have a long and a short tab; to unlock the injector move the short tab to the opposite side as its original locked position.

Once you have one injector out you will see how the clips work.

When installing the injector orient the clip so that you must move the long tab to lock the injector into the fuel rail.

Thanks for the info. The clips are going to go back in. Tried without them twice. First time had a leak in #7 and then second try had a leak in #S 1,3,6 & 8. Third time has to be a charm using clips to hold them in the fuel rail so all I have to worry about is seating them into the manifold.

First time playing with injectors and now I could almost change them out in a NASCAR pitstop.

Did you lube the injectors before you put them in?

I use white lithium grease. Some people just dip them in motor oil.

Either way, if you don't lube them you can distort/rip the o-ring and have a problem.

The clips are really useless.

Stewball:

If you still want photos of the clips, let me know. Most newer style injectors do not have the groove that is needed for the little clips. I just removed a set of 88 Lucas injectors from my 89 and have parts for pictures if you still need them.

No clips needed for replacements.
