lets say for example that my 1995 chevy truck uses the same type of ECM that a 95 vette uses. would it be possible to get some type of computer that will allow diagnostics, as well as programming? i WANT to buy a hypertech programmer, but i NEED to buy a diagnostic computer.....is there an ALL in one???? or is there a software for my laptop that is all inclusive????
i would also like this "computer" or software to be able to diagnose my 85 vette, so i really need an 1 tool does it all thingy!

Unless you transplanted a new ECM into your Chevy truck, it has a different ECM than your Corvette. To add insult to injury, GM changed the connector on the 94 to OBDII style, so it won't match up to your '85.
If one complete unit is what you are after, you might have to get a GM Tech I or Tech II scanner, but I don't know diddley about those.
For your '85, there is freescan available. I don't know which to suggest because I use Diacom, but WINALDL and CraigMoates FreeScan are the 2 that come to mind for the '85. Like I said, I don't know if they support that year, but WINALDL DOES support '84's and FreeScan supports 90-91, so someone might be able to fill in the blanks. -Matt-

Re: corvette / non-corvette topic (85_togo)
You can't use the hypertech on either your 85 Corvette or the 95 truck. Both use chips to program the ecm. The hypertech only works on ecm's that can except a download to change variables. So, forget that idea.
Any OBD I scanner will work with both the 85 and the 95 (if so equiped). Lots of choices out there, including free software for a laptop / pc. Do a search on this forum and you will find the links. For somewhere around $200 you can get a limited Auto X-ray that will work with both. Lots of choices, but I'm not sure what you want to accomplish: Read codes/view sensor data or change ecm tables?
actually trying to do all of the above.....but i only want to use 1 thingy or program....i don't mind the different cables.....i know of a local cable shop that can custom make them......just lookin for either software.... or programmer/reader. if software is the answer....can i download a free version of each????
thanks for the responses!
By purchasing TunerCat for $70.00 and 3 definition files for each of your 3 different ECMs, you can reprogram them. Each def. file costs $20. I believe the two '95's that you have use FLASHProgramming so you need an interface cable with that.
To change the '85, you need a EPROM Programmer and a spare EPROM.
This does NOT include the sata logging software. It could turn into an expensive proposition. -M-

Re: corvette / non-corvette topic (HighHopes85)
The 95 Tahoe/ Yukon / Suburbans had a chip. Not so sure of the C/K series for that year, but think it was the same. Both were OBDI.
Don't think we are talking about a 95 Corvette (which I don't know if it will accept a download or not). Think the 95 Corvette was used as an example.
If you wan't to change parameters in your 85, you need to blow proms. If you want to change parameters in your 95 Tahoe / Yukon / Suburban you need to blow proms (very different program from the 85 Corvette). If you have a 95 C/K not sure, but will bet a case it's a chip also.
Scanning and blowing chips are two different things. You should learn what you are doing before you set out and change anything. You can hurt your vehicle if you make mistakes. That's the truth.
