My 87 Vette - finished total new interior and exterior restoration (like new),and finally everything working then "Blam" got hit by boat tire from vehicle in other lane. Wiped out driver side mirror, door glass and door. I received 60+ cuts from glass. Combined impact of tire was 80+ mph. Outside mirror took some of the impact and probably saved my life. Another foot and would have hit dead center on windshield. Wife was shook up also, but no cuts. I am on side of raod trying to stop bleeding (take blood thinner) and this jerk leaves the scene so police could not get him. Several people did stop to help which was appreciated. One other car also was hit, with two children inside. Tire bounced off after impact and hit this car also. But thankful we are all OK. Next have insurance to deal with. Where is a good place to get a door, mirror, etc? Plan on having a dealer do work, but doubt new parts are available. Also noticed that door light on hit side stays on. Any ideas why? the wires to the mirror are just hanging there now. I had to disconnect the battery to turn it off. Vettes sure take a tough beating and keep on going. Kind of glad the window was up.
Also, got lots of "atta boys" from police for maintaining control. They said these type accidents usually cause loss of control. Z-51 suspension sure helps. :D :blueangel:
Oh God damn! I am glad to hear you two are ok. Surely someone will have seen something and will speakup later.
Same thing happened to a neice of mine. Big rig tire  from oncoming side slammed right in the middle of her Honda Accord windsheild. Shaken, but ok. Several witnesses later chimed in. Big rig Co. ins. payed out a large settlement.
Put the word out you're looking for eyewitnesses. Hope they find the person.
Again, glad you were ok.
Another Merry Christmas present ...you and yours are all right. I wouldn't be quick to dismiss your parts not being available at the dealer. Acording to my micro-fiche. Most of the parts you mentioned are available.
  Glad to hear your okay. Wow, 60 cuts from safetly glass. I guess its a good thing we have safety glass because it probably would have been 10 really big cuts with ordinary glass. I have tried to break safelty glass with a hammer so I know it takes a pretty hard hit to break it.
It just occurred to me that a person on blood thinner should probably have some super glue (I am serious they use it in surgery) around for times like this. The glue should help stop the bleeding. It probably should be in a safety kit in a special sealed bottle too. Good driving.
wow! That was close... several years ago a guy was driving north on I95 in Philly when a southbound torque converter came through the windscreen.
We appreciate the kind words. Some days are better then others, but in Florida there are not very many bad ones, and I like to think overcoming adversity builds character! Hope the Chevy dealers feels the same way when they rebuild the door, etc. Had my first contact with an Insurance company in many years. They sure try to "bend" things to their way of operating, using designated repair shops, etc. Some how I doubt they are looking out for my best interests. Kind of like the fox looking out for the chicken! :D :blueangel:
You might want to hold off a few days before you commit to a body shop. I had my 95 worked on a couple months ago after an accident and I chose a independent body shop that had vette experience. State Farm also insisted on their list but luckily my body shop was on the list. I was happy with the body work and the fact that the shop was able to use all new parts. They werer able to argue that buying a used clip was more expensive than parts plus paint. More work for them, better results for me. AFter I got my car back, it still had some quirks so I negotitated to take it to the dealer for thefine tuning. The result was a real fine job. Actually better than new. I got a new paint job after 87 k miles and a new water pump. Choose carefully and good luck.
i hope you got the name & number of a few of the people who stopped to help you out. i'd call them & see if you could get any information, if anyone got a plate # you'd be set but even if not you might not be SOL. even at the worst case of your insurance paying for the damage becuase you couldn't track the guy down your car will be fixed & you should get over $5,000 in injury cash for what that idiot did to you. as far as finding parts i'd call most the corvette businesses around your area & see what you can find. but then again since insurance is paying for everything there's something to be said for just letting GM & your insurance figure it all out. if you work it right & do save some cash on parts it might leave you enough for a outside repaint which i heavly suggest if half of your car is wiped out. why try & match it when it's not much more work to shoot the entire car?
