Default Aftermarket shifter

Does anyone know of an aftermarked shifter that will fit under the stock console of a 84? I am drag racing my vette and would love a more positive means of shifting, thanks!

If an A4 does the stock shifter feel the same from 1st through 3rd, that is no indents?

If I hold it in first, it still shifts to second, but what bothers me is there seems to be no detent between drive and overdrive, the detents all the way through are hard to feel. :yesnod:

OK, sounds like my stock shifter; I couldn't get solidly into 1st nor any shift feel either.

What I did was to pick up a used shifter for $45 (I wasn't sure if my plan would work plus I didn't want my Vette down very long) and cut indents into the shift gate (stock here are none, it's smooth across 1-3). I have my method with measurements and pics on my site (if any questions just e-mail me). It's realy rather easy to remove the shifter from the car. I only had a Dremel with a cutoff wheel to cut the hardened steel in the shift gate so that was a bit of a pita, but the result was well worth the effort.

Now I can easily pull it into 1st (I rubbed a lot of leather conditioner into the boot while it was off and repositioned it a little to the rear) and also have solid feel on the 1-2 & 2-3 shifts. I was out cruzin with some "Vette guys" recently and had no problem running up and down between 1st and 2nd, a lot. I think I may be up to trying some autocross next season.

I still need to mod the little verticle piece in the indent control (you'll see what I mean if you get into it) to get a feel for the 3-4 shift. Also, since the dent button rises up a little higher now, it sometimes pops up and I need to push it back down on the shaft. So I need to drill a hole in the shaft and dimple the two retainer clips on the bottom of button. These are just a copla little things that would have been nicer to have done the first time but I was on a learning curve with this experiment.

I think this would be a nice mod for you and it still looks completely stock.
