How do the wedges you can buy work to lower the front of the car?

The shims are thinner so the chassis sits lower on the front spring; as opposed the the rear end where the chassis is hung from the tips of the rear spring and longer bolts are all tha's required to lower it.

so the shims go where the spring mounts in the engine cradle/cross member (replacing what is currently there)?

If you locate a picture of a stock spring you will see to big rubber stoppers on them about 2" high or so. You cut those off and then glue the poly wedges to the frame and then shorten the aluminum spacers adaquately. The wedges should be used so you don't have bare metal rubbing on that glass spring.
