So, I did some things on my 86. Had to change the head gaskets so I thought, why not at the same time change the heads themselves, cam, put headers, air pump eliminator, intake manifold hi-flow, hi-flow runners...
I also had a chip made by pcmforless.
Now, I have put pretty much everything back together. The battery works, everything lights up, the engine turns but I have no spark.
Any ideas what I should check? Any typical mistakes I could have made???
Start with distributor. Check for wires not plugged in 1) there is a four wire pigtail I believe behind the distributor 2) are the wires plugged into the distributor itself? Do you acturally have a hot wire to the distributor?
The cap has a terminal labeled "BAT". There is a large pink wire that plugs in from below, like the 3 wire plug, to the outside of the three wire plug, to power the ignition system. The tach filter plugs in next to it, where the cap is labeled "Tach".
Thx CFI EFI had forgotten the pink one started right up need to get the timing right as she stalls right after starting up
That is what it sounded like. You always have to reset the timing when the distributor has been out. Don't forget to disconnect the ESC while setting the base timing and just as importantly, to reconnect it after the timing is set.

Hello ladies and gents the car still dies after start up.
I reset the timing as told in previous thread but still cant get it to run correctly.
I removed the AIR pump and put in replacement pulley so alot of the anti pollution is out.
I plugged all the vaccums but still not luck.
If I hold the gas down it will run but will back fire in the intake big time.
I set the baseline timing by having #1 at TDC then put the distributor between #1 and #8 on the distrubutor. I have rechecked it 5 times still no luck.
Does the distrubutor have only one spot that it will fit on the cam ( it sure seems that way ) ?

Any ideas help would be greatly appreciated...
Was that #1 TDC on compression stroke or exhaust stroke ??
It has to be on the compression stroke. Could you see the timing mark on balancer when you set it to # 1 ??
Sounds like an either or......first the distributor will fit into more than one slot.....lining up the oil pump shaft with a long screw driver helps, one other thing, you put on new heads, are you sure you got your valve lash set properly? better lose than tight.
Simple one....could the crankshaft damper be failing and the TDC mark is really not where it is supposed to be?
Hard one....are you absolutely sure the cam is installed correctly? Did you get the timing gears and chain back on in the correct position? If it is off one tooth you are going to have problems.

THAT is not setting the base timing. All that describes is the installation of the distributor. However, the rotor should be set between the #2 and #1 cylinder terminals in the cap, closer to the #1. What you describe would result in severely retarded timing. You can likely get it closer by rotating the body of the distributor. Besides removing and replacing the distributor one tooth back, you can re-index the wires in the cap terminals. NOW, you have to set the base timing.

Once you have the base timing properly set at 6° BTDC, double check that you don't have a couple of spark plug wires crossed.
Will try to do timing again according to CFI EFI if that doesnt work will recheck the cam ( almost 100% that was done correctly) as for the valve lash did it this way :
hand tighten till play on rod was gone then gave it 1/4 turn extra as per Comp roller rocker instruction
P.S this is my first V8 push rod engine I'm a convert for the import scene
