Today I read on the Internet that Valvoline Synpower brake fluid is no longer
available. I went to the Valvoline web site and I can't find the Synpower brake fluid listed. The only one I see is in a blue bottle that is synthetic dot 3 and 4 fluid. Is this the same stuff? The Synpower was in a gold bottle. Anyone have any info on this? What should I use in my 93? Thanks for your help!
I can't find it either. When I did my front pads and rotors a month ago I cleaned the local Autozone out of its last 5 bottles. Now when I asked for some more for putting on my SS lines, they tell me it is repackaged. I know it is not the same because the SynPower was in a gold bottle and said synthetic and exceeds DOT 3 and 4. I'm going to another store tonight to see if they have any stock left.
This is bad, my brake system is 100% Synpower and I have half a bottle left. The tricky part is that I have a bias spring to install, now I'll have to flush the system with...Hmm ok here it goes...
Which brake fluid is the number #1 (now) out there ???
I got no clue, I have been using synpower since it came out

Correct It's not the same:
New stuff...
- High dry boiling point up to 480°F reduces the risk of fluid evaporation and possible brake failure
- Minimum wet boiling point is 311°F
Old stuff...
- High dry boiling point up to 503 F
- Minimum wet boiling point 343 F
Series 500 High-Performance DOT 3 Brake Fluid (BF3)
AMSOIL now offers Series 500 High-Performance DOT 3 Brake Fluid. AMSOIL Brake Fluids provide superior high-temperature performance in auto/light truck, high-performance, racing and powersports applications.
The minimum dry ERBP for DOT 3 brake fluid is no less than 205°C (401°F), and the minimum wet ERBP is 140°C (284°F). That might not seem very high, but in most brake systems the fluid in the caliper won’t reach that temperature unless the brakes are abused. It only takes four percent water contamination to bring a DOT 3 fluid’s boiling point down to the federal limit.
AMSOIL actually released two new brake fluids recently. Both are polyglycol ether-based brake fluids and compatible with most other DOT 3 and DOT 4 fluids.

2. Causing problems that were going to cost big $$ due to litigation.
I have never heard anything bad about the product so I am guess it cost too much to make and Valvoline was not selling enough of it and the profit margin was too low! In a bad economy the so-so product sells better...
Hello All,
I did a bit of searching/Researching the Synpower brake fluid. The best I could find was about 6 of the large bottles for me.
I talked to two parts store mgrs. and got two different answers.
The first guy said they just changed the bottle and were still selling the same stuff (My hairy butt).
The second guy said that he 'heard' the synpower was more costly to produce than other (imported) synthetics and was not selling very well. His version said that they were replacing the higher-cost stuff with an equal to the imported stuff.
I don't know about any of this to be true, but it sounds plausible to Me. Especially with the prices of fuel and all. If you are 'joe-average' American, I don't see people paying for REAL high-end stuff, right now.
There are still a few bottles in the rural stores, though. That second manager told Me that there was not a recall on it. He stated they were told to 'sell-through' it to the 'new' version.
I am going out 'Riding-rural' this weekend and buying all I can find!
I don't doubt there are similiar products available but at about $6.00 for a big bottle, I'd like to stock-up on the 'good-stuff'!
Is the dot 3 mixable with dot 4 in Amsoil, or should I just stick with the Dot 3 for my 93? Also how many bottles do you think I need to do a flush?
The AMSOIL DOT 3 and DOT 4 fluids are compatible with each other and almost every DOT 3 or 4 fluid on the market. That would include any polyglycol ether-based brake fluids.
AMSOIL recommends the DOT 3 for your 93. Unless you track the car, that would be more than sufficient and is about half the cost of the DOT 4. I can PM you pricing if you are interested.
When I flush the brake fluid in my 02 Z06 it normally takes 2-3 bottles depending on how thorough I am. For peace of mind, you might want to just pick up a case of 6, then you could give it a good flush and have a couple of bottles to spare.
