Default Chinese Spoiler

Well I just put a new Chinese front spoiler on my 86 roadster. These wonderful reproductions are made out of hard plastic instead of the relatively pliable ABS. The Chinese plastic was so hard and stiff that I had to use my wife's hair dryer on full hot mode to soften the spoiler up enough to bend it into the proper form to complete the installation.

Well, I finally got it on and drove 4 miles to get some gas. As I pulled into the station the left front spoiler lightly brushed the driveway entrance and shattered into 6 parts. GREAT VALUE, THESE LOW COST CHINESE REPLACEMENT PARTS.

Does anyone know what the OEM part numbers are for the front spoilers on an 84-88 Corvette? Any help here will be appreciated.

I own an original L86 Z51 Coupe - not sure of the OEM GM part#'s( the original GM's were in 3 pieces!), but I do know that the Z51 parts were different from the non-Z51 spoilers. The z51 spoilers are deeper/lower than the 'regular' spoiler pieces. Just a heads-up if you are looking for a GM spoiler! Cheers.

Yes, thank you. My car is a roadster Pace Car and it came with the lower Z51 spoiler, which frankly is a little too low for normal (non-track) use. What I think I need is the standard model OEM ABS pliable three piece spoiler.

Default China Suxs

They produce grap. Thanks to our "Wal-Mart" mentality we has boosted them out of the dark ages. Recently China announced that they will be manufacturing a Jumbo Jet to compete with Boeing! Give me a break. I am not getting on one. They will be crashing all over the dang place! I make an effort to avoid buyin stuff made in China. Getting harder to do so every day! Ok I will get off of my soap box now.

Where did you buy it?

Got one from Mid America a few years ago and it was a little stiffer than stock but wouldnt crack or shatter like you described.

Sad thing is America wanted cheap, it got it. Now look what happened.

I really appreciate it when a company tells me that a part was made offshore. I think both Paragon and Corvette Central do this. At least I know what I'm ordering and I don't expect it to be the same as OEM. It would even be nice if GM informed us about some of the OEM (reproduction?) parts they sell. Some of the OEM stuff from GM is real crap.

I don't get to concerned about this issue with my '85 but I'm very particular with my '58.

I use The Last Detail, a shop/dealership in Atlanta for most of my Delco/OEM parts, some even made in Mexico, Taiwan, China, or even Canada. They gave me years of great services and quick shipping.

http://www.tld-corvette.com/

Anyway, as for the China bashing: all you gents realize that the specs of the products came from the companies placing the orders right?

I can understand quality control issues, it happens everywhere in every country. (I'm looking at you, Mexican Delco relay plants!!) But if company A wants factory B to make something with $2 grade plastic instead of 'beefier' $6 grade plastic, who's to blame? Us, for wanting cheaper parts for next to nothing.

It's a crapshoot, my friend, a crapshoot.

I wouldn't put a Chinese ashtray in my car, much less a spoiler. I'm actually surprised yours didn't fall off while you were driving. They produce nothing but feces. The only company that I know of that produces many different products and does nothing offshore is Edelbrock. I'd buy anything from them in a heartbeat.

A Chinese jet? My God are those passengers in trouble. They're also building cars in Mexico. The drivers of those Chinexico cars and everyone else on the road when they are, are in deep deep trouble. Any driver, when those cars are on the road are taking their life in their hands. You get what you pay for. And when you buy Chinese, you're buying crap.

I'm weary of the China bashing. I bet you searched all over the internet for the cheapest part available and then bought it, and now you're pissed because it was of poor quality. Had you spent the cash on the OEM part you may have saved yourself a post here on the forum and us 10 minutes of our lives.

WE are the ones who forced all manufacturing overseas by buying the least expensive product and avoiding the dealers providing better parts and better service because they cost 20% more.

Perhaps if our wages became a little more realistic to compete in a world market US made parts would be cost competitive.

No, I don't support offshore manufacturing, but I realize my MSD parts are going to be more expensive than the China replacement and I pay the premium. The sad thing is that the last coil I bought from MSD was made in China. The one it replaced was clearly stamped "made in the USA."

I bought mine from Corvette Central. I don't recall where it was made, but it fits nice and hasn't shattered. My vette is pretty damn low, to boot.

Alot of Chinese stuff is complete garbage. Here's the problem I have with alot of it. The American companies like American Tool for example. They make Visegrip and now import all of their Visegrips. They haven't went down in price a dollar yet their cost to manufacture them went down significantly. A pair of Visegrips always had "the original on the handle and made in the U.S.A." Now they say nothing and the cases they come in are printed global.

It's the typical corporate mentality. Let's make as much money as we can and if American workers suffer, oh well. As long as we're making a lot of money, that's all that matters. Sounds a lot like Congress.
