It's not exactly free, but have you thought of indexing your spark plugs?

Go get a big box o' spark plugs. Now, take a permanent marker and mark where the prong is pointing up. The idea is to have all your spark plugs uniformly facing up to give you the best burn possible. Just an old hot rodders trick.

Free mods???
If it has the frisbie on the water pump pulley toss it for 10chp.
Do the cut lid with K&N for another 10chp.
Do the cut-back spark plug mod, details on my site.
Install a 160deg T-stat & fan switch.

What intake & exhaust are you running?

You need to use regular motor oil to break-in your engine at start-up, but after that's done, use a full-synthetic oil (5W30).

I have done alot of free mods and some that were "unfree" or very cheap. You can go the intake route, which includes the cut lid (easy and cheap), remove screens on the MAF (if you have one), and port the plenum (remove the square thingies that are in the way). The air foil fits in with these mods I believe, regardless of whether or not just installing one of these shows up on the dyno. If I was air, I would not want to slam into the gap in between the throttle bores. If there was a way to smooth this out with a grinder, everyone would be doing it. Remove the cat if you have no inpection. I think there is some HP in knocking out some of your intake air temp. A throttle body bypass is free and easy, lowering your coolant by making sure your radiator and condensor are free of all debris, and add 2 bottles of water wetter, a lower intake air temp will give you a couple HP. That is almost free....

yeah, you can use the plugs that you've got, but your gonna go through more than just 8. Each plug is threaded a lil differently, that why you need a box o' plugs.

Moroso sells a kit to index your plugs. See Summit or Jegs.

thanks powerpigz
i already have my intake cut open and my radiator is completely clean
i cant take the cat off til i get my LT (dads rule but i dont get it)
I want a Super Ram intake by Accel eventually so thats another thing im saving for so ill jus keep myself from screwing up the current setup with the intake.

Another noob question: how do you do the throttlebody bypass?

Have the 160 deg stat. but trying to find a way to make the fan come on at 170 comp controlled. if not i will put the switch
and i dont know what you mean by frisbie on the water pump?

Right now my exhaust is stock all the way to the cat then i have an aftermarket Y sionce mine was rusted out and then some mufflers
intake is stock besides K&N housing and filter

Muffler elim is almost free if you can cut them off yourself and weld some pipe in place. This would also count as weight reduction which I would consider the best free mod. Cats, muffler, resonator, spare tire, jack, egr, A/C, radio, speakers, passanger seat, carpet, lighter wheels, etc.. You probably don't want to go that far but every bit adds up. Also anything you can replace for lighter parts. I believe it's every 100 lbs reduction = about .10 in the 1/4. There's a good bit of weight reduction just by going to headers and straight pipes.

I don't want to start a war here but is there proof of 10chp gain by pulling the frisbee or a worthwhile gain by installing a 160 t-stat? The intake will give definate seat of the pants gain but that should be more of a torque increase that is noticed. I mean no offense and have no reason to question these recommendations other than to give the OP the most info possible and satisfy my own curiousity

This WILL be my daily driver for quite a while tog et what i want out of highschool adn college if you know what i mean so carpet, passenger, radio A/C(for ladies not me) must stay. And Torque Thrust will be going on eventually. dont know if its lighter but look nicer. Mufflers will be gone when i get money for headers and pipes for my Y from the LT to a 4in colector instead of cat then out of my 3in Y to some tips. Those cost money tho

and spare and jack and all is already MIA
