I replaced the battery in my wife's 91 several weeks back. Took the car (and her) for a ride today. Pulled in the drive and the battery light went on and the voltage meter dropped to approx 10 volts.
Put the trickle charger on the battery and its charging (i.e. taking a charge).
Turn the ignition to "on" position and the meter shows 12 or so volts (so the battery is producing). Start it and it drops to 9-10 volts.
Sounds like the alternator - right?
Any tips on removing the belt and alternator before I pull the tools and my hair out?
The alternator is very easy to remove and re-install. Look at the belt tensioner pulley, it has a 1/2" sq hole in its arm. Place your 1/2" breaker bar drive into the hole and remove the belt preload so that you can slip the belt off the alternator pulley. Remove the red wire on the alternator (careful, there is 12 volts on it so don't let the wrench or wire touch ground. Or....remove the ground cable from the battery first). Unplug the connector on the alternator and remove the bolts holding the alternator to the engine brackets. Replace by doing the reverse.
