I have the timing cover off to remove the water pump drive from the block. I had to pull the cam sprocket & timing chain to get enough clearance to get it out. First, I lined up the marks on the crank and cam sprocket so they are facing each other. I noticed that the keyway isn't in the same position as these marks. I don't know if the keyway is referenced to anything or not. I want to mark my balancer for #1 reference when it goes back together, so if I have to adjust timing on my MSD Opti, I'll have a reference point to start from. Is this position top dead center with the sprocket marks facing each other? I just didn't want to have to go through the TDC "bump stop" method if I'm already there. Forgot to mention, this is an LT4.
You might check to see if the crank gear has only one keyway slot.
Some, as you probably know, have 3. One for 4*advanced, straight up, and 4* retarded. Hope this helps.

I re-read your post and see you haven't touched the crank gear, so disregard my post. Sorry.
I believe you are at TCD for number 6 when the marks on cam and crank sprokets face each other, another turn on the crank will put you at TDC for number one, the mark on the cam sprocket will be at 12 o'clock.
Aligning the drive pin of the Opti with the cap off should tell for sure where the rotor is pointed when the cam and crank sprockets are aligned in either position.
Thanks guys. #1 or #6 wouldn't matter for marking the damper. It would still be at TDC of one of them 180* apart. This is just for a timing reference point in case I have to adjust the new MSD opti. I just didn't want to be marking it for #3 or something wierd like that. "DUH", never thought about sticking the opti on there and looking at the rotor position That would have answered my own question!
