I'm in the process of replacing the water pump on my 96 LT4. Thought I'd also replace the plugs, wires, and Opti cap & rotor. Looks like I have to remove the serpentine belt pully from the crank in order to access the Optispark. True?? Also, any noticable increase in performance with the addition of a throttle body air foil?
Need all the help I can get.

Reason: Adding additional question.
There must be a thousand Opti R&R threads in the archives. The airfoil is a waste of money read the FAQ at the top of the page and especially Nathan Plemmons page on mods that work. No you do not need to remove the tensioner but it will help if you do the wires to remove it. I hope you have a FSM on hand BEFORE you try an do this it has all the torque specs for the bolts and you do not want to strip an aluminum thread out by using too much torque. Don't ask how I know.....
As far as replacing the cap and rotor most people will tell you to replace the whole thing and be done with it.
OOps I thought you were talking about the tensioner not the harmonic balancer. Yes it does have to come off. I helps if you hit it with PBBlaster for a couple of days and let it soak.

Did this not long ago on my car, the WP started leaking a week after I got it! I also replaced all the hoses while I was at it. As others have said, there are many threads on opti replacement and many discuss removal of the belt pulley. For some it seems to be a real pain, but it seems at the very least, you will need to get access from underneath to persuade it to come off. I used a 2x2 about 2 feet long and tapped it with a hammer and mine came right off. Others have had to keep turning the crank and keep working at it. I also removed the power steering pulley, not necessary, but opens up that area and was worth the time to do it.
