I need some advice on how to flush the brake system plz. Can it be done just by gravity, topping off the reservoirs to prevent air getting in?
Or do you need to bleed them by pumping the brake pedal, which is where the speed bleeders would help. Any help appreciated.
I've never gravity bled, but it can be done. I personally use speed bleeders and they work great. You can aso pressure bleed them using a special tool and an air compressor.
59VetteFI,
Thanks for replying. I've heard of using speed bleeders but have not tried them yet. Personally, I despise working on brakes, and usually let a pro do it, but I may try it while my car is down for exhaust and other upgrades.
Speed Bleeders make brake fluid bleeding an easy one-person job. They are the simplest way and you don't do anything special to install them; unscrew the old bleeder, and screw in the Speed Bleeder.
You might also try the Motive pressure bleeder. This is a small platic tank you pressurize after attaching the inclued cap to the reservoir. Then simply open each bleed screw in turn to let fresh fluid flow through the lines.
While the Motive unit holds a quart of brake fluid, most people just use the tank for air pressure and refill the M/C reservoir as necessary. Less mess this way but it takes a few minutes longer depending on whether or not you are doing a complete flush or just bleeding the calipers.
Corvette brakes are easy to do and you can save hundreds of dollars by doing your own brake job.
Get a FSM for your year of car and follow the procedures. Very easy to do!!
Or do you need to bleed them by pumping the brake pedal, ...
This was my method to flush the system; instead of speed bleeders I just ran a rubber hose from the OEM bleeder into a bottle of brake fluid to prevent sucking air back in when I released the pedal, cracked the bleeder and pumped the brakes. After it ran clear fresh fluid I snugged up the bleeder and moved to the next wheel; the method was quick and worked very well.
