A common problem is a failing OD switch on the shifter. It's easy to replace. Do a search on OD button for some info.

The OD on my 87 will go into OD in low gear depending on throttle opening percentage and low RPM. Slow speeds in 1st will allow a 1st gear OD.

Here's some information on how the OD operates based on the year. Note that the 87-88 is different in operation from the earlier year units.

First off, I like the color you chose for your vette.

Is your switch in the shifter or the console? The shifter switch is a little hard to find and more detailed to install then the console one. Search here for OD switch. There are plenty of threads related to this.
I'm not sure about the 87's but on my 88, until the engine reaches 123 degrees, it won't go into OD.

The shifter mounted switch is not easy to find. E-Bay might be the best bet. Before you do that though, when you press the button, does the OD indicator light come on? If the light comes on then the switch is good and the problem lies elsewhere.

The usual cause is the Relay. It will also act erratic if the fluid level is too low. A switch; if broken, can be replaced by one from Radio Shack. Sorry,I don't remember the part#.

He was talking about the fluid in the OD unit. It uses 2 quarts of Dexron II/III ATF (non-synthetic).
